upper guardrail question

When I changed the stanchions on my Fulmar, I raised them from 24" to 27". It has made working on the boat a lot safer. Solid rails would certainly be wise from the stern to the front of the cockpit as it makes leaning against them firmer. Personally I would fit side gates at the maximum beam point as stepping over 27" is difficult for those with short legs. Using wire in the sections from the bow to the front of the cockpit would be my choice. Presumably you will still have a lower wire fitted. The final point you should check is will a solid rail affect any feature like winch handles or hatches.

I suspect they will get bent when rafted up, or possibly by spinnaker guys.
They will need to be strong, people will stand on them, so more stanchions might be needed?

I don't think it will look bad, a lot of racing boats have the upper lifeline mostly padded.

Nauticat have solid guardrails although the top one is capped in teak. going back into history it was also a standard feature on Hillyards, but using galvanised water pipe. Many MOBOs also have solid rails all round.

Think you would have to do the stanchions also in welded tube rather than use the flexible standard ones.

If you want a look at a Sirius btw there are a couple at Haslar but quite rare otherwise. The boarding ladder in photo looks a useful feature if you are looking for upgrades?

yes boarding ladders are one of the things we are thinking of in connection with this question

You have a boarding ladder standard to aim for now . I think that's a Spirit version in the photos ?

yes I am thinking lovely scupltural stainless with hardwood inlays on the steps. I am going to have a lot of fun fabricating on the boat when it arrives, and it will stand me in good stead for doing stainless fabbing on other people's boats in the future. I do enjoy those little jobs. There is a lot of overpriced underspec rubbish out there at yottie prices. I still consider sometimes making up a few bits and bobs, but I have lost the business head I once had so one off projects are all I am likely to do really, unless I find some spare energy and drive.
