E97 Raymarine chart plotter . I suspect this is maybe 7 years old, and wanted to check the options for updating. I don't have the original information of which chart it is, as this is on a boat I bought recently. I believe I have to go through a Navionics dealer to update it? I am a little confused by the Navionics website, as do not suspect there has been a subscription on it for a while, and don't have the previous users details.

Best way to go about it? Get the card updated by a dealer ? Thanks!

Best way is to buy a discounted update card, then use your card to activate it. You need to know what type of card yours is, and you can download any area of an equivalent type onto the update card. This can all be done via the Navionics chart installer application on a PC. You can also update the existing card directly using the chart updater but that means you will not have the old one as a spare and actually might cost more. All the above assumes that the existing card has never been used to activate another, if it has you will have to purchase a new full price one.

I recently had the same conundrum with an old E120 plotter using a Navionics Platinum + card. I went to a Navionics agent (on the Clyde who shall remain nameless) who was completely hopeless and didn’t have a clue what to do. Essentially they ended up telling me it was obsolete and couldn’t be updated. Utter tosh. I downloaded the Navionics chart updater to a pc, put the SD card in to the laptop, loaded the updater app and followed the very straightforward instructions. the UK and Eire chart update was about £110 IIRC. Very simple, very easy, but the Navionics agent was hopeless.

I agree that the Navionics website is poor - certainly could not find any prices for chart updating. Also various tech compatibility issues I reported to Navionics.
It works fine if doing simple updates. But need to be very careful with versions.
After consultation with a very helpful human at Navionics, it transpired it was not possible to update an old Navionics Platinum+ online with the cheaper Navionics+. So in the end did a post back to Navionics and they sent a new card by post.
So I suggest
- be very clear the specific product type you have
- consider contacting Navionics UK direct by email as very hekpful
