Some time ago I posted info on a new outfit based in Anacortes developing what I thought was a cracking good design for the modern long distance cruiser, based on the fact that Nordhavn's etc are becomng quite major players but haven't (and perhaps shouldn't) yet really gone mainstream, mostly as the slow speed thing does put many off.

The NW is semi displacement and with a single Cummins 450 can scoot along at around 15 knts but drop back to 8 knts for 1200 nm range or more. For a 45 footer she offers a lot of space and that all important fuel economy is very attractive in this day and age. Very high tech build and top quality.

The chap and his wife that started the co built no 1 and duely set off on a marathon journey in all weathers down the west coast of the States, reports from various jurnos that hitched a ride say she handles the big stuff very well indeed.

Anyway things have certainly moved on since early year and they are now on no. 4 with a 50' now in build and plans for a 55 later in the year and and seemingly much bigger too.

I like it, alot, love Nordhavn but that max 9 knt speed or less if you have stabilisers (7.5 knts) would put me off, punching a 2 knt tide, thats awfully slow, each for to their own of course but someone like me who would consider moving into something more economical having blasted around at 25 knts, sub 9 knts is a big get your head around thing.

Not entirely sure but based on the price of the 45 I guess around £600k, sounds alot but figure on it being pretty well kitted out and a heavy build not bad I'd say.

Single John Deere 610 hp so again probaly 15knts - 16 knts, 1400 gls I think so around 2800 nm range at displacement speed.

A boat like that is designed for all sorts of weather, but she looks like she'd roll like a *itch in any bit of a beam sea?

plus the hull colours are rank /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

She does look nice indeed, and I agree that having a "fast" option is nice, though it requires some compromises - ruling out steel hulls, in the first place.
But it's this idea (which isn't unique of this yard, admittedly) of getting rid of full walkaround to have a wider saloon, which really drives me mad.

Actually, I'd say with a hard chine SD probably alot less than say a Nordhavn, if you take a 55 Nordhavn and stand beside it the pilot house towers above you way more than their 50, up there beam on and no stabilisers isn't very pleasant.

Of course only reason I am posting this is cus I am off on one of my day dreams again sparked off by arrival today in Douglas by the daddy of them all......................

Thanks Trev. Nice boat, and i love that sofa on the flybr

By coincidence i was reading this morning the MBY test in the current issue on the Mainship34, Nord55 and Selene66. I'm not convinced about the fuel economy of all these so-called economical boats. My Sq58 gets better mpg than all three of them at 9.5kts. I get 1.1mpg and the engines are doing an uber quiet relaxed 1040rpm. The Selene is 1900rpm and 0.72mpg, the Nord 55 is 1800rpm and 1.05mpg, and even the little mainship is only 1.07mpg and a yuk 2500rpm. Ok there are many other big reasons to go for this type of boat but mpg and saving money with loss of red diesel aint one of them, imho. So, much as i like these trawler boats, I'm not convinced that a big planing mobo (with the chance to do 30knots when you want to) isn't a better option.

Not wishing to open a big debate here or get flamed by Gludy, as this mpg subject has been done a bit to death. Just a coincidence seeing your post and reading MBY this morning, that's all.

I owe you PM replies, sorry, will do soon

JFM.

I have recently come to the same conclusion.

Having debated this subject with friends with a SD, we can match economy at pre planing speed - 800rpm seems about right for us at 9 - 10 knots. Range = 700 + NM ?

SD boat has better range but only because of bigger tanks.

OK, we roll about a bit but I find that tacking across the waves helps enormously.

I do love the Fleming 55 though /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I also love the odd 32 knot blast /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Trevor.

This is Hummingbird which is based beside us at Malahide.

Notice the cockpit cover mod - works very well and excellent quality. Saloon opens nicely into cockpit all on one level - owners request.

for sale at around $900k

[/ QUOTE ]Asking price is actually 850k$.
But aside from that, I noticed that she's advertised as good for a max/cruise speed of 12/8 kts, so unless this ad is wrong, "scooting along at around 15 kts" is hardly an option.

...what's next, Magnum looking for an ice breaker?

Yup Mapis, I like those boats a lot, and the more I think about them the more I like them. (I'm thinking hard about what to get next. The Sq58 will be 5 years old at end of this season - time flies, only seems the other day I was watching it in build at the factory).

You have D12s right? I bet you are getting 1.3 - 1.4mpg at 9knots and ~800rpm, which is better than the best D or SD trawler yacht

Hi J

Yep I wholeheartedly agree for purely commercial reasons /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

An ABS 47 twin IPS 600 has better mpg at 25 knts than a Nordy 47 at 9 knts, ABS twin 435hp engines Nordy 1 X 170 hp engine. Ok totally opposite ends of the scale the Nordy is a monster of a thing and will take you across the pond but anyone thinking I'll by a single engined 47 displacement boat and save a shed load of fuel over a twin 435hp engine flash mobile is off the mark.

I like the NW45 because it can have a bit of turn of speed yet take you through the lumpy stuff too. The one advertised has a 400 cummins but later ones I believe have a 450hp add the loss of speed due to having stablisers and you are down to 12 knts but I wouldn't bother with the stablisers, expensive and complicated, so I think 15 knts is a reasonable speed for the spec I would have. Still at a cruise of 12/13 knts it make a huge difference to the time from A to B than at 7 knts cruise.

The MBY thing was interesting and as you say (and Mick) at slower speeds there aint a hill of beans between a planing D & SD.

In the end I guess it comes down to the type of boating you do, basing any purchase on mpg is a waste of time, pay for the go go juice and be happy !
