I'll try this one again as the message didn't make it on to tbe board last time.
Can any one enlighten me (an uphill struggle at the best of times). Coming out of Haslar last Sunday, I saw a yacht which appeared to have a continous boom running back from and ahead of the mast. I think she was named Novia. I'd be interested if anyone could tell me a bit more about her as I can't figure out how the rig would work - Many thanks

Sounds a bit like an aerorig - unstayed mast with a very solid permanently attached boom that extends ahead of the mast. The foresail is attached to the forward end of this spar, and the main is set on it aft of the mast. The whole mast/boom assembly rotates to trim the sails. I've never sailed one, but there used to be a largish cat with this rig on the Caledonian Canal.

I think this is the same boat (Cat.) that I saw in Swanage the previous week. If so I think you will find that the this is an Aero Rig & the boats rig is branded as a Walker Wingsail.

Does that help.

If it was the same Cat he seemed to be having trouble with the rig.

It certainly looks impressive but it does not appeal to my eye. There again I am a Boring Old Fart.

Snowleopard, who posts here, though not for some time, has one of these rigs on his cat.

Are you still about Chris ??

Re: It\'s an aerorig

Bit like having a boomed foresail - I think one of the objectives is to improve sail shape and improved control.
