Unlucky or the new norm

People will always moan about the weather. That doesn't have any bearing on whether the weather is generally worse than it was though. The data suggest that it is worse, and getting worser and will continue to do so as climate change progresses.
This probably means that moaning will increase too, so perhaps we need a weather and climate forum to sweep the threads into so they don't bother people so much
Do you have any links to show that summer weather on the UK South Coast is worse than it was 50 years ago ?

Not sure about the weather, but the UK Official Index of Moaning & Whinging is showing a clear rising trend! 😀

Not sure that sailors saying it's windier than average is a moan or whinge. Thanks to the decent breezes I've had some thrilling sails this year and I reckon my kids have had some of the best sails of their lives.

There is plenty of info on this available, yes, along with proper studies. Unfortunately it's not as simple as showing average wind speed or average rainfall since the weather is becoming more "gusty" for want of a better word. Rainfall average for a month is similar to historical, but it tends to dump in fewer rainfalls, causing flooding and droughts. The average wind speed over a month is similar but it's now averaging severe storms with complete calm. The average temperatures show a clear trend to hotter though, and this is partly the cause of the weather changing

I've looked at a few examples over the last 50 years thanks to friend Google. Basically uk summers are generally crap with some crappie than others interspersed with the odd hosepipe banning ones.

We we lift out for the winter on Friday🤔 Has there actually been a summer?

There has here in England. In fact in our area the farmers seem to have been able to harvest the wheat and barley some weeks earlier than usual. WE don#t seem to have had as many light wind days as I would expect in an average summer though. That may be down to the (albeit weak) jet stream being pointed straight at us for most of the summer.

Wind on or just aft of the beam on my return from France on Monday. It was a bit boystrus, somewhere in the f5's so had genoa and unusually the main reefed. I managed 7 knots at times and for my old tub that's pretty fast, in fact it was a record passage of 12 hours Cherbourg - Poole chain ferry.

Blimey that's a mega load of chain.

Unofficial long range forecast circa 1964 "Summer this year will occur at around 14.30 on July 25th..."

Fastnet Gale 1979

Mid 1980's my log for an entire fortnight holiday has one entry. "Wind never dropped belFow 6 for long enough to get anywhere"

Some people recall that they had a great time unexpectedly sailing in strong winds that they hadn’t thought they would….its a matter of confidence that could be gained by the average fine weather sailer taking a course in sailing in strong winds so they feel capable of taking the family out

Dinghy sailing inland in the Scottish Borders, my impression is that the last couple of seasons have been all or nothing: high winds making sailing unpleasant in a valley loch subject to strong gusts or flat calm conditions in which to en joy the sit-on kayak.
