Uninhabited Islands,Any explorers ? :)

Ive been to quite a few islands but only Macquarie island really fits your requirements. Its outside territorial waters, and only has a small number of (non permanent) humans in huts on one end. The rest of the population is quite large, mainly Royal penguins, King penguins, elephant seals, and rabbits. The place has an interesting history.

Of the other sub antarctic islands Ive visited, Antipodes Island , being the furtherest place from London. Population is NZ seals, Wandering abatrosses, erect crested penguins, and a parakeet.
I went in a small ship. I'm a keen and experienced sailor and I wouldnt sail there for anything.

My most "alone with nature" island experience was on Enderby Island, knowing there were no people for miles around, and being confronted with a very excited young bull sealion, 3-4x my size, who ran towards me for 50yds stopping close enough to touch, about the distance my heart felt to be pounding. Apparently you dont turn and run because they can move very quickly , and they then think you are a girl sealion...
I stood there for a while as he expressed his frustration with the world, and my intrusion, and we parted on friendly terms (meaning he didnt bite me as I slowly stepped off sideways like a crab).

Hello Samakand :)

For your information i just found this:

http://www.antarctica.gov.au/living-and-working/stations/macquarie-island.

In regards Enderby Island i would have been fairly tempted to do a runner from a bull sealion charging towards me

The link provides a number of links to webcams for antartica and for macquarie island as well as information about the island, it appears the major military forces of the world have carved out boundries in Antartica for themselves, Australia has laid claim to macquarie-island i assume as it falls within their sector, though it is still very interesting indeed ! :)

I had read the definition of an island under english law was "to have enough pasture for one season" i assume for sheep. So with this in mind there must be many unrecognised land masses that fall below these requirements so do not get mentioned on the maps ? or does it not make a little more sense they should be mentioned to show them in case of risk of collission with boats ?

It's the remains of an oyster lagoon in Chichester Harbour, near Emsworth. Just a few banks sticking up above the water not far from the shore. But as kids my younger brother and I still loved sailing to a deserted island :)

Here it is:
http://maps.google.com/?ll=50.834938,-0.945243&spn=0.004865,0.010793&t=h&z=17
The orangey-brown bits surrounding it are underwater when the tide's in.

That was where I did my capsize for my RYA Dinghy certificate back in 1974'ish - Crab Searle's school....

I guess more recently I would say my island hopping was in Langstone - any of them surrounding Binness Rithe* - we used to call the little tiny one "Dog Sh*t Island" as it bore an uncanny resemblance.... :D

They're all protected now and people get irritated if you land... shame in one way.... :o

Edit: Ooops... and sorry - doesn't count - UK territorial waters, albeit Langstone Harbour....

Hello fantasie19 :)

Only a few months back i put "langstone harbour" in the wikipedia searchbox, after reading the info i scrolled down to "map resources" after clicking on that i clicked on "acme mapper" i then zoomed in to see something white, i did not think it was a boat because it did not appear big enough in comparison to the boats to be seen bobbing up and down and around, i zoomed as far down as it would go to see a partly submerged catamaran with only its front half visible above the water.

Is it just me or just what is it with Langstone Harbour they have so many boats go down?

Can somebody please show that man a chart?

Blimey - so there is! N 50.82564 W 0.99503 Any thoughts that it might be a bit of satellite blur??? That shadow looks very much like a sail.... :D

PS. So "Dog Sh*t Island" becomes "Round Nap Island"... shame... preferred the previous name..... :p

It's almost certainly not a half sunken boat. There are lots of examples of 'ghost' boats on Google. Follow Fareham creek for example. I suspect they are artifacts from layering different photos.

Hello alahol

Of course by the same token if we see anybody bobbing up and down in life jackets they are a google layered ghosts, layered in water ? well layered in waves ? and sooner rather than later they will be layered in wrinkly waterlogged skin ? Ahhh i bet they never paid any attention to the tradgically and understandably mistaken obstruction as they sailed towards it thinking thats obviously a google ghost layering and not a wreck ? ;) :D

All the worlds a stage! even the watery bits! :D

Not islands, but I saw video (maybe youtube) of some people that landed on Russian lighthouses and looked around - looked VERY spooky - all had been gutted and there was talk of radiation risk (don't know why).

Acme mapper wont show it at all well, though a photo can be clicked on :)

That's Instrahull, small Island with lots of grey seals during the summer months. Due to the distance from the mainland the water is much clearer. The island has a small harbour and concrete harbour wall which small yachts can tie up alongside, quite sheltered too, although I suspect its for visiting the lighthouse. Didn't see anyone else when we visited so could be uninhabited.
