we're having such a fab time in the uk that we might change plans a bit and stay till next season. But of course the uk winter weather it utterly crappo, so anyone kno if there is somewhere on the south coast we can keep the boat indoors?

Very difficult especially for D2 size. Hamble Point and Moodys have a few large sheds but they tend to be used for repairs rather than storage. Worth a phone call though.
The other alternative is to get the boat shrink wrapped when on shore but vast majority of UK peeps just leave their boat uncovered and usually none the worse for that

Re: Indoors? !!

Now what's the point of that? Cold but sunny winter days are totally fab around Solent. No much about, no charging for lunchtime stops, no queues at the bars etc etc. Turn up the heating, put on a warm hat - great.

However, there must be decent safe indoors places to park the boat over-winter. Not that I know of any....

A very long shot, but the British Military Powerboat Trust have a large shed, though (a) I don't know how full it is and (b) I think they have anyway been trying to clear it out because they are being evicted in Autumn '05. However, the rent might come in handy for them. Also, it's near Hythe, so you would be on hand to offer advice to Jimi about steering mechanisms, holding tanks and the like.

D2 is obviously not a military vessel, so they might turn you down on grounds of ambience, but perhaps you could swivel mount a couple of your kid's water pistols at the bows? Just a thought.

try Southampton Yacht services at Saxon Wharf, they can get a J class indoors.

dont think Powerboat trust could lift your boat and in any case their shed is about as water proof as most of their exhibits....

Western Marine Power are the people to talk to, but they are v busy and full so I'd be surprised if they'd let a boat in just for storeage.

A friend of mine is having work done by them on a 63 footer and he pays £850 per month for storeage.

swivel-mouted water pistols

ooh, i have just worked out how to connect these, as the fire thingy can use the sea water andi cd pipe water to the bow , then slot a standup water pistol thingy in the anchor locker. Is it illegal to drench other people whilst testing the erm fire hydrant? Is there a commercial Supersoaker?

Re: swivel-mouted water pistols

Dunno about a commercial supersoaker, but how about the people who make water cannon for the constabulary - I'm sure they could rustle something up for you.

Then, as you say, it's either a case of "I wuz only testing the fire hose" or "just doing my bit for the forces of law and order, officer".

yep, it is less than 40 tons, actually about 32 tons light i think, so mebbe 35 ish tons...but the width is a key thing, with the boat potentially scrunching in narrow cradle and of course wurrid crane people who (not unreasonably) like a big safety margin of, well, more than 10%.

um think they are a bit *too* big!

also, you can't park in a shed and just dump it there, they want to have lots of work done on the boat. So, i may have to commision a fragile glass statue for the foredeck, which will break a lot during installation, require extensive rework and hence keepem going all winter.

Why not sail it up our way, To the Clyde.....
There is a huge storage building at Fairlie Quay beside Largs, With a massive hoist. Perfect for Winter Storage/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif/forums/images/icons/wink.gif.
