I need some new unbreakable plates, mugs, etc for the boat. Can anyone recommend where to get some good ones?

We got some very respectable plates and bowls from John Lewis in their sale. Not the cheapest outside the sale, but moderately less tatty than most alternatives.

In France you can get the nigh-on unbreakable glass stuff they use in restaurants but I've not seen it available to the public in the UK. Arcoroc is the name of the company and Aroc is the brand.

Corelle if you really need "unbreakable" - it's made of opaque toughened glass, so it looks like glazed china but is much stronger. But how are you expecting to break it? We had plastic plates on our first boat (my mum went and bought them before I could order the Corelle) and I don't remember ever dropping one - so for the new boat we have bought china and so far so good. And that's on a sailing boat where we expect to cook, eat, and wash up at sea, which I assume you don't often do on a motor boat.

We had a good set from SIBS a few years ago, stood the test of time in means of breakability but over a few years they have developed a crazing on the wine glasses and a dullness. Considering the cost it works out cheaper now to just buy a relatively cheap set and renew on an annual basis.

This year we picked some up from Ikea, when SWMBO recently opened the locker while underway a few glasses fell out and rolled along the cabin floor. Not so much as a scratch on them so hopefully they will be good to last the season.

Nauticalia had some good nautical themed sets, although I haven't looked recently.

Similar pricing to equivalent camping /melamine sets elsewhere IIRC.

After looking all over we bought a set of French-made white toughened glassware from Tesco (ARC brand), in their "budget" range of tableware. It's quite thin and lightweight and after several years of use not a single item has broken!

Thanks for all the replies. This forum is such a great source of helpful info.

There is a huge variation in the price of some the stuff you have recommended, from £30.00 for a set of 4 melamine thingies from a caravan shop to £76 for one plate from the Churchill range!

I think we'll go to the caravan mob!

bought some really nice stuff at Southampton boat show. Company was called Galleyslave. I think they also have a website for online sales

see MBM last month or google 'Corelle' crockery
+1
Our business is in the Caravan industry and this Corelle stuff would be my recommend. Yes, it's a bit pricier than cheap and cheerful but it's really good stuff. I have two sets on the boat as they come in sets of 4 (16 pieces). Feels like china but unbreakable and can be microwaved too. Comes with 3 yr Warranty IIRC.

Hope this helps.

In my student days mugs were a constant breakage problem. One housemate bought a set of 'unbreakable' mugs and crowed about it. Challenge taken. Throwing them against the wall shattered them quite nicely.

Nothing is unbrakabe to a determined breaker.

As a footnote to this thread. When I abandoned my Princess purchase and bought a Sealine instead the Sealine came with a full 8 place set of high quality unbreakable crockery. Result!
