Re: Next time

HA you bin watching me aintcha.
Borris does slobber a bit but rotwielers are not dangerous.
These are the things I do when getting parts sometimes when the opponent is just as tight it gets to be real fun .

Well thanks for the vast response! Seems that the majority are saying I should just cough up regardless, after all I've got a boat must be able to afford etc. etc.
The boat wasn't actually for sale at the time I had done a part exchange with a dealer on a new boat and had advised the service engineer that she would soon be going. I had arranged to deliver her by water to the dealer I was getting new boat from. I don't mind paying for work that needs doing I just like to know what I'm likely to be paying beforehand not after the job was done. If I operated my business on that basis I would probably be in the Bahamas by know on a whacking big Trader or something!
It does seem that the boat trade in general operate on a different set of rules to the rest of us. Or is it just me???

Re: That changes it a bit

if you've done the part exwith the dealer and the very same company's service department is charging you gentlemans prices to fix up the part-ex, then you are right to kick up a stink. Tellem to "sort something out", code for at charging cost for the work. Cos you're paying to increase the value of the part-ex.

Re: That changes it a bit

Unfortunately its not quite like that.
I did a deal on new boat with mine as part-ex. Boat dealer checks mine over and agrees price (boat on rack so all easily viewed).Sold as seen you might say?!
I then later on ask volvo dealer to de-inhibit and service boat assuming it would be same service/price as previous year He also was advised that boat had been sold.
The boat dealer has offered me a below market valuation on my old boat offset with a discount on the new. So is it not like cars where the garage then take part chop in, service it, do it up and then put an inflated sticker price on them?
I still don't understand how work can be carried out, whether or not its needed, without asking customer if its alright first and agreeing price.
Its not that I'm trying to wriggle out of paying, I just think the way the boat trade does business is not always that good.

Re: That changes it a bit

All agreed. That the boat trade is a law unto itself. But not in this instance IMHO. Bellows and anodes are normal service parts. like oil or plug changes. But what the hell did you want it sevicing for if it was already sold?? And to a dealer who had seen the boat on a shelf and priced it in that condition.

Recent similar experience where the volvo agent did some service items that were due at 100 hour intervals even though I was only at around the x50 hour mark. Strangely only the items that involved replacement of expensive (high profit margin) parts were done, not those that involved work, like adjusting tappets. They also replaced a 'deffective' pressure gauge - how they determined this when the boat was out of the water and winterised beats me. They could not then tell me what they had done in the 7 hours work.

In future will not use this volvo agent and will request a description of the work to be done.
