Boat out of water .Checking over bellows and the lower one (exhaust bellows ?) appears to have a small drain hole in bottom.Assume it should be there? Looks as though moulded into rubber.Cannot recall one ever being mentioned in any of books.
Should it be there,...the hole that is./forums/images/icons/frown.gif

O goody goody./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif.
Drained oil in legs today and one of the drain plugs was loose, only a couple of threads holding it in. /forums/images/icons/frown.gifOil seemed same colour in both legs though.Seemed a bit thick and gloopy to my eyes,Presume it is ordinairy 20/30 engine oil.

Thick and gloopy, was it milky in colour tho? 20/30 engine oil should'nt be used in yer outdrive, can't use EP grades either. Needs to be the proper stuff.

What outdrives do you have on your tub?

Pretty sure Fred has 280Ts, interesting question since the time approaches for me as well. What oil is recommended and do you buy the genuine Volvo oil, shurely not!!!!!!

Nah! Bugger paying volvo prices, they only do synthetic or semi synth. I buy mine by the gallon. Get it from a wholesaler that I know. Works out about 15 quid a gallon. Normally get about 4 fills for that. Same spec and as the marine stuff. I'll dig out the container and let you know what it is, bit dark to be digging in the garage now.

Got 280T.And oil seemed a bit foamy to me.
Inspected propshaft seals and unable to see any thing obvious.
Can water get in anywhere else on leg.If so is the wear on seal/gaskets etc easy to spot or do you just replace and have done with it.
May as well sort as out of water for week and awaiting surveyor to get report for up coming insurance renewal.

On the 280 water can get in, as you say prop shaft seal, gears shift mech seal, under the cover. Also look at the O rings on the drain and the dipstick. The other place is the bellows which is bad news as its probably also got to the intermediate shaft bearings as well.

What leg is that for? As I know theirs previously been threads running about oil types and some have been to use gear oil and others the same oil that goes in the engine. Mine are 280s and once the engines are back together it will be haul out and service the legs.

According to Volvo Penta workshop manual, 280 & 290 SP drives use engine oil SAE 10W-30.
280 & 290 DP drives and the MSX drives require synthetic SAE 75W-90 (API GL-5).

Spoke to Keyparts who confirmed cheapo stuff for me/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif and Gold plated stuff for all you D/P owners/forums/images/icons/frown.gif.volvo want about 12.00 per litre for their magic fluid.
KP can supply same stuff for 9.00.
