For info: it is pretty much the same in France with a couple of exceptions.

1. The unbraked limit with the same registration as the towing vehicle, unlike everywhere else in Europe, is 500 kg. I brought a trailer I built myself to France but had to sell it, as the total weight of trailer plus load (car) was 640 kg. It would have been impossible to register.

2. I believe that trailers do not need a CT (MOT) test assuming they hold a certificate of conformity. They do need to have their own registration and plate and to have insurance.

In Latvia ... we can tow a UK trailer here without plates - 750kg max load if unbraked ..... BUT there is a time limit of x days if intended to stay here and not returning to UK. On or before that limit - it must be presented for CSDD inspection and registration.
They don't like 'own built' trailers unless from a reputable kit ... but they accept reluctantly !!

There's a 'quirk' about this .... if the trailer has own registration - then it needs own insurance - the car policy does not cover it.... as CSDD told me. But if its not registered and towed as a UK 'visitor' then car policy does cover ...
Personally I would insure separately if visiting here ... Traffic Police can be somewhat 'troublesome' ...

Also in France:
In 2012, they changed the regs. So, effectively, you can no longer build your own. Previously, under the 500kg limit, it was a free for all. Some of the really frightening ones at the local B&Q probably weighed over 500kg with no load..
As a one time pro trailer builder, I find it a bit frustrating, as I need one in the 500 to 750 kg range. If it was under, I could fake the age a bit. Currently looking for 'doer upper' that I can adapt to the non standard launch system.
You can build your own, but, unlike in the UK, it has to be homologated. Which is OK if you are a series builder, but prohibititvely expensive for a 'one off'.
UK gets round it with a one off cert. Slightly more careful MOT, like kit cars need to be reged.
