If you understand the system and have the nerve you will be ok If you organise your insurance ahead of time you still have about 1400 Euro blocked on your card for the excess. Your insurance may or may not pay out for this and this is what scares people at the desk. There are some that are honest and I would recommend Autoreisen from their own website not a 3rd party one. Have hired too many cars to count of these people and others.
The staff at the desk worry people into buying their insurance which brings the car total price to a sensible one where it should have always been
Rather like that lovely man from Ryan Air with his 1p flights
The ques at the desks of the less reputable ones are also horrible caused by people arguing about the insurance on offer

At Barcelona airport Hertz desk waiting for my Seat/Kia/other and the guy said “Do you fancy this for an extra 6 euros a day”
I’ve since spent no time on the boat just blasting around in this thing.
