We all know you can’t get a berth on the south coast , why do you think it is , could it be peeps bringing back boats from the EU . What do you think and what marinas do you think have berths for say 13m.

I believe this happened because every man and his dog bought a boat during Covid and these boats needed berths.
Be interesting to see if berth availability returns to pre covid over the next couple of years as these 'new' owners bail out once they realise what they have let themselves in for.

It's not just the south coast of England - the marina I keep my boat in on the west coast of Scotland has a waiting list for the first time ever, according to the office.

Ok so are you saying there was a lot of boats on the hard.

CBILs & BBILs on cheap to repay deals and fear of impending doom I suspect made many make decisions they had been holding off of for years.

Chickens always come home to roost though. Beware the tide turning as then, as it always has, supply will outstrip demand.

Every year (well, not 2020!) I look at the hundreds of brand new boats laid out across Southampton Boat Show and I think 'well, they've all got to go somewhere'. And that doesn't represent those manufacturer's total supply of boats that year, it's probably 5% at most, so the actual number is vastly higher (tempered of course, by the fact that some go abroad).

So if half go abroad, then there is maybe a Southampton Boat Show x10 worth of new boats to park somewhere each year and very few getting scrapped. With few new marinas being built, it is not inevitable that there's going to to be a problem eventually?

I would suspect that the number of new models becoming available in 2022 is vastly less than when we bought a first new boat in 2001 -in those days the trucks were rolling in loaded with Bavaria etc and Sparkes marina was seriously crowded with new boats. We were in those days only able to find space at Wicor and while the berth was fine the mud which sprang up separating us from our pride and joy with some regularity became a test of nerves as we returned home however little else was out there. The sheer volume of new boats seem far less now however the proliferation of slab side wide mobo might have impacted the outlook. Generally though there seem to be space at say Haslar but it’s very size dependent. Other Gosport marina seem happy to quote me for space as well and while the new eating facilities are Haslar seem problematic in terms of quality the other features compensate compared to rivalsIMHO.

I think the shortage of berths is overhyped. I'm moving berths this year - yes, I was on a waiting list, but someone else sold their boat and the space came free. That frees up my old berth for someone else.

Suspect the numbers of boats being repatriated from France and Spain is tiny.
Doubt that anybody who has gone down to the Med attracted by the Sun, is going to bring their boat back to wet damp rainy windy UK in a hurry.
Especially with the additional penalty of the 20% Brexit Tax !
We have actually lost two boats going in the other direction , a small Beneteau and a Sealine S41.
