UK adopt Central European Time - Good news for winter boating?

it is NOT an extra hour of daylight. It is just moving the clock dial ! It does not give you any extra daylight. If you want to use the available daylight, then adjust your work or recreational clock to give you full access.

It would greatly improve my entire life especially in the summer. They've been talking about it for years and tried it some years ago - it was brilliant! Who gives a toss about Scotland they want more independence so let them have a different time zone!
Good for industry, good for the young, good for the old, most people want it so it will never happen!

I sincerely hope the Scots stick to their guns and this never happens.

Like many of us with jobs that aren't strict 9-5's, double summertime would mean I don't see daylight during the week for 5 months a year... At least as it stands I get to go to work in the light, without that it would be seriously depressing.

My goodness you sound a bit bitter! Who says Scots want independence? Some do, but I would bet that most don't.

Anyway other than your rant about not giving a toss about 5m Scots who are part of the UK, I do happen to agree that the idea of an extra hour in the evening would be great, speaking personally.

We use out boat throughout the winter and even when it's cold, the weather can be wondefull and calm. It's often better than the summer, other than it's freezing sometimes, but getting dark early is a pain as I get bored in the dark from 4pm until we go out for the evening at say 8pm.

I've got some bad news for some of you guys.

The Sun shines for exactly the same amount of hours whatever we mortals have on our watches.
Then there is the tide, it doesn't care what time you think it is either.

I think we understand that but personally I prefer it to be dark in the morning and lighter in the afternoon/evening.

Sure the sun shines the same number of hours each day, but is the number of USABLE hours that is improved by the proposed changes. Tides and cows being milked are the same regardless, but those working normal hours will at least go home in daylight instead most likely of both ways in the dark. Adjusting your work time hours is only feasible if you are self employed and your customers are also working hours to suit yours.

Yes if Scotland don't like it, tough, do something different and have Scottish Local Time, most of the population lives south of Hadrian's Wall. We are just 60mls from France here in Poole, and 5 or 6 times that distance from Scotland. If Scotland wants to try a bribe of paying tuition fees say for all English students maybe that might be worth a thought though.:)

double summertime for me please. Unless you are a late riser in the winter mornings it's dark anyway. Much nicer to go home when it's light. Oh, and sod the Scots. No one works up there anyway.

Most customers don't see it that way.
I just can't walk offsite at 4.30pm even if I have started at 7.30am.

I think it's a great idea, but then again, any further South, and I'd be swimming.
Possibly not such a great idea for the Scots.

I think you will find that that the majority of scots dont mind reduced daylight hours in winter but what we hate is during summer months you cant get moving for arrogant English Wankers probably much like yourself!

This has to be the most sensible, accurate comment of all time on this website, how shocking !!!!.

Basically if your work is better done in daylight, do it when it's light.

In answer to the original question, I think this will depend on where in the UK you go boating. Here in the SW, there are often clear skies and flat water in the morning, but rain/overcast/windy and thus choppy in the afternoon. There's also the time factor for those of us who launch/recover and as already pointed out the number of hours of daylight remains the same! Thus I would doubt that an ongoing switch to BST would make any difference to the majority of leisure boat users unless we all work when it's dark - i.e. at night! :D

Here in Spain, where we are an hour ahead of the UK, the switch to winter time is still a PITA. It makes me think it isn't the actual time difference that is the problem, just the change itself, when winter evenings suddenly get darker.

That said, sunset isn't until 6pm, even in January, which is nice.
