I know submarines have sails - but if she set sail - she does not really need a propellor (as she will be handled by tugs when she arrives)

But why do we persist in saying that an aircraft carrier, or any other vessel, 'set sail' for (anywhere)

:)

Back in the 50's, my Father was onboard 'an' aircraft carrier, which following a fairly thirsty discussion in the ward room the previous night, conducted a test to see whether a carrier would be able to be moved, solely by the thrust from the aircraft on deck?

I was just about to start looking up the tech. specs of the F35, but that might put me on a list.
Fortunately it's the work computer.

p.s. my initial gut reaction is no, at least not enough to have a meaningful effect. One for Randal Munroe though.

For the same reason you put your 'steaming' light on when 'motoring' with your diesel or petrol engine.
