If I recall correctly, somewhere on the interweb there are some charts which show typical winds at different times of the year around the world. They are quite large files though.

If anybody knows what I am talking about can they please tell me !

Try here.. You will find the monthly charts for various parts of the world in .pdf format. You're right about file size - 11Mb each but they're great when printed onto large paper!

These are the charts that show the percentage of days that the wind is in a particular direction in the month (and it's strength). They were quite useful last winter when doing the SailOnline.org round the world race...

I am choosing folder C:\ChartKit\BSBCHART which is the directory where Maptech installed all my charts. When I "Add Selection" I still only get to see the black background with blue outlines

Most likely you have BSB4 charts. To display these in OpenCPN you have to download and install a plugin from this page -> http://opencpn.org/drupal/downloadplugins.
The OpenCPN log file is a wealth of info if/when something don't work as expected. Check this link http://opencpn.org/installing_opencpn#log-config
