One of them has a new engine in a packing case and piles of soundproofing, the other's got a new Bravo 3 drive plus engine air intakes, twin fuel filters, gauges, single lever control, etc. etc. and I'm not allowed to touch any of it 'cos of this conservatory. On the plus side the conservatory has meant no grumbles about the cost of all my new toys. Swings and roundabouts I suppose.

And a very nice escort it is too !! What are you planning to do events wise ? Back in the day I used to have a nice mk2 all gp4 except the engine and box ( cheaper when it went bang lol ) we used to do the nicolet championship mainly welsh forests.

So far just booked to do local dukeries rally on June 7th.

Hopefully do a few more later in year , probably woodpecker, trackrod in north yorks forest and premier rally , might also do what was the sunseeker but there not sponsoring it this year .

Is that the quickest thread drift ever? I had a pair of Healey 3000s in a previous life and just went down the pub in them (one at a time!) Then a Triumph roadster (Bergerac) and the most quirky was an Austin Metropolitan.

Sorry about that , I hope you got a great deal on the vetus parts , I use Vitesse marine for all my vetus parts ,

I've no idea what an Austin looks like but know the Healy very well , and of course bergeracs motor .

Good luck with the build, take you time and do it right. My dad always said " measure twice cut once "

Tell us more, what's the engine and boat ?

Paul, if you do the woodpecker I know a fantastic pub you could stay at in Ludlow!!!

Oi, Bugger off and get your own thread.:D

The engine is a five cylinder in-line Vetus VF5.250 (250hp) Bravo 3 x drive 2.2:1 ratio.
The boat is a 1978 Reinell V-204. Typical shallow vee American sports boat with narrow side decks and voluminous interior accommodation and cockpit. I think there were only a few brought into the UK as I've never seen another. It's having a total in and out rebuild with the only original part being the shell.
So this raises the question that many members are going to ask. Why spend all that money on an old banger?
First of all this boat has the best internal layout that I have seen on any boat of this size.
Secondly, I was going to buy a Jenneau Leader or Beneteau Ombrine as these were both very nice looking boats.
However, on closer inspection I found that both would need substantial alteration to make them as I would want. It therefore seemed a bit silly to spend £40,000 on a boat and then start cutting it up!
So it was back to plan A and rebuild an oldie to my own spec'.
I've never had an off-the-peg boat so when we sold our 12m flybridge semi-d to downsize I thought I would go for it, but then realised nothing suited me exactly and every boat I have owned has either been rebuilt or built from scratch. So I thought, one more before we call it a day.
Finally, I'm not one who buys a boat with the thought of resale as one of the main criterion. I buy (or build) a boat that suits me and that I can enjoy now.
I've never lost money on a boat yet (although inflation helps and in real terms I probably have) so that's my reasoning for doing this.:nonchalance:

thread drift

Fair point - apologies !

Thats an unusual choice of engine cant be many of those about what is it based on ? I guess vetus didnt bild the core engine but marinised someone elses engine?
Sounds like an interesting project and a good way to get what yo want and know it inside out
Be interested to see how it goes together maybe start a build thread

That's exactly what I'm now doing, I bought my Sealine 218 because that's what I wanted (its most suitable for what we do and I really like the style) and have stripped out everything internal and started again, am sticking with the AQ205 for a year or two but will no doubt change at some point depending on how much use I get.
I like the idea of rebuilding an old model and getting exactly what you want.

The overall consensus is possibly FNM (whoever they are!) I never thought of Vetus as sport boat engine suppliers and was quite surprised to see these common rail engines listed so decided to give one a go as they also supplied all the ancillaries and various other bits as a package.

I think we are a dying breed, but nice to know there are others with the same mindset.
