Two or more warps?

When mooring up I always just use two long warps one forward and one aft with the breast rope off to the shore cleat & tied off & then back to the boat as a spring. I've always had a slight doubt as to whether this is really the thing to do, particularly with potential wear in the middle of the rope. Any thoughts?

I somtimes just use 2 warps for tying up and have not noticed any undue wear. Overall though it does seem easier to use individual warps as they can each be adjusted individualy rather than stripping a warp back to the beginning.

I was always taught one rope one job. I have however done as you have but only when i have only had really long warps that have been a pain to handle.
I do prefer to have a seperate spring and feel it is probably best practice to do so.

I was also taught as a stopper the double thumb knot (donot know any other term for it) i find it much better than a figure eight, but later instructors have taken a dim view. And donot ask about fenders. It all comes down to taste for fenders.

It was like that when i found it

Sometimes I do the same, but my preference is to use independent breast warps and springs: it makes it easier to handle the lines if you need to set up springs to get off in an onshore breeze, or lead lines back to the boat if sailing two handed.

Particularly if neighbouring boats wrap their lines all over the same cleats (see many recent posts).

I think it is inherently bad because if the springs are tied off together somehere in the middle of the boat, the springs can't "spring" and will hold the boat hard against it's fenders....pontoon moorings are so short these days which makes it more awkward.

As an aside.....I have 2x25mtrs of 18mm 3 strand nylon sold to me last year by Aladdins Cave as fit for mooring which I will happily give to aspiring circus performer/Indian fakir looking for a suitable prop for the rope trick. These ropes are so stiff you can get all of it in the air unsupported (well, nearly). A mug comes along every day...........

I sometimes use the double thumb as a stopper , when I really want it to stop and am not too worried about undoing it. I think the reason the figure of eight is used is that it can be easily undone if necessary. Ithink you're right though & I'll start using separate ropes.

Ah yes, there's a washing machine over t'other side (of channel) which now makes slight graunching sounds..........It didn't even come out any bluidy cleaner. Tried dragging it behind - much to amusement of Yarmouth HM who asked if it was Irish washing??

According to Aladdins Cave problem through being outside all time............beam me up, pleeease.........

Is that the same stuff that seems to have an opposite polarity to cleats and refuses to make fast?

I found if you cut it into 32 inch lengths it makes handy piping for trousers that allows you stand them in the corner. ;-)

The stuff Alladin's are selling now at £1.50 pm is fantastic value, and soft, unlike some 3 strand I bought out of the bins at Marine Sperstore. So soft, it comes with an Andrex puppy
