TV aerial sorted - but a Freeview or Freesat TV

Where are you?
If UK with a normal aerial, you need a freeview tv. To use a freesat box, you need a feed to a sat dish.

I believe you get a lot more channels on FreeSat. I was told that, during the Olympics, you could get every sport on FreeSat whereas on Freeview you were limited to 3 or 4 at most.

Channel Islands. Getting a sat dish for the boat, but now it's whether to get a freeview TV or a freesat TV - I'm confused....

Possible to get both tuners in a TV, but Freeview are the terrestrial broadcast digital signals and Freesat are the satellite broadcast digital signals.

Does that make sense?

I think that all the new TVs come with buil
t in Freeview (digital de-coder) as standard (the last 4 I have bought for both house and boat have) but some will also come with a built in Freesat de-coder. One of our Sony TVs has this.

For what its worth, I think I got the last TV for the boat from ac-dc-tv off the Internet, who specialise is boat, truck and caravan TVs that are designed to work off 12volts. They were helpful with advise by email and over the phone.

Having sorted the TV aerial, the next choice is the TV.

So do we need a Freeview or Freesat TV?

You need a Freesat Decoder - no need to change the TV as Freeview Coverage in Beaucette is poor esp. when the tide is low and with your berth being so enclosed.

I have tried a few decoders on boats and found the Humax one to be the best as it has a lip sync feature as there is nothing worse or confusing if the mouth movements and sound do not match.

There is version with a hard drive recorder built in a well.

We have both. More channels of rubbish on the freesat tuner, but gives us HD pictures. Difficult to tell the difference in reality. Yes we had about 15 BBC Olympic channels, few of them broadcasting.

which ariel did you go for?

I have a choice of two aerails.

The KVH M3DX or a simple manual dish such as a Kerstan mini*.

The TV will be the Panasonic TX-L24X5B which has Freeview HD.

Choice of Freesat unit yet to be determined.

* Leaving cost out of the final decision, the issue against the KVH is that it would be mounted next to an aluminium based pony mast which would get in the way of any satallite signal from a particular direction. I could always turn the boat around if needs be, but...and another question would be if a received signal would bounce off the ally mast and cause a shadowing on the picture.

Anyone know?

The Cello range of TV's have built in Freeview and Freesat for info.
We have the Cello 22" and works fine. Have not as yet tried the Freesat facility.

Impossible to get shadowing on a digital signal.
The signal is effectively a string of 0's and 1's, so if some are missing then you get a blocking effect on the image.

Thanks jimg - I'm showing my age!

The first TV my parents has was in a large cabinet, took an age to warmup, and the screen wasn't black and white, more like purple and less purple.

Same here!!

I forgot to say that it is very unlikely to happen, as long a the receiver gets a "full" of the digital stream either directly or bounced then the image will be OK.

My Sky dish has trees and phone lines in its line of sight and we only get occasional dropouts.

This is a easy way of checking line of sight :- http://www.dishpointer.com/

You need the Astra option

Despite my googling to fiond an answer, I'm stuck.

Can freeview channels be seen on Freesat?

If so, which satellites?

Yes and No! :D

You are getting confused and mixing channels with delivery systems.

The Freeview system which is received through a conventional aerial has these channels:- http://freeview.co.uk/Channels

The Freesat system received from a dish has these:- http://www.freesat.co.uk/what-you-get/our-channels/

As you can see Freesat has the same kind of set of channels and in fact a few more.

It is not a matter of Freeview content versus Freesat content, but more a matter of how you want to receive the media channels.

Does that make sense?

Being a fan of Really (channel 20) I coldn't see it on Freesat or even Sky. Hence the qn.
