Anyone witnessing any of the recent civil unrest? Seems quite serious looking at todays report in the Guardian, curious nobody has mentioned it in the forums yet.

I'd have thought that seeking evidence of civil unrest in the major Turkish cruising areas was akin to observing the Brixton (or any other British) riots from a mooring on the Hamble. Same goes for Greece: many of the episodes featured in the UK meejah rang no bells with cruisers there.

Nothing to worry about imho, just sensationalized in the press as not much else going on at the moment. even the F.O. only advises only to avoid the areas and not get involved in them.

So far, 3 dead (4 if you count the policeman yesterday) over 4000 injured, sitting at around 2000+ arrests, a prime minister with a clear and now obvious islamic agenda, fueling the fire with dismissive comments! So far some 600+ tonnes of tear gas has been used on demonstrations (daily) in over 70 cities across Turkey. Each night at 9.00pm the crowds return, and grow larger, not including the national strikes this week by public employees and demonstrations during the day. The domestic flights are booked/full from most cities in Turkey going to Istanbul and Ankara today. Whilst the Turkish press is controlled directly by the government and hence coverage inside Turkey is decidedly limited and one sided, the international press have begun to cover this in a better fashion, but they seem only to be focused on Istanbul, while there are daily battles on the streets in Ankara and other Turkish cities!

If anything, the international press are dumbing down their reports, not sensationalising! the numbers of injured who have lost eyes because tear gas is fired directly at them is comfortably in double digits, and there are plenty of pictures show that, and blood on the streets! There is a real and genuine concern from people on the street that this could escalate very quickly indeed!

There are times when it is well to stop and think before publishing numbers like that. It is blindingly obvious that couldn't possibly be true, or anything within about a thousandth part of it most probably.

By all means come and see it! There are 3 large demonstrations just in Antalya each evening (not including the daytime demonstrations)! there are similar demonstrations across the country, in over 70 cities of Turkey!

As far as the volume of teargas, I can't account for it other than the governments own report at over 600 tones, but when you see the live news and the rapidity that police have been firing, or even the collected, empty shells and grenades littering the streets, coupled with the thickness of the gas drifting through the streets, or the fact that the residue of gas is so prevalent the following mornings that traffic police have been wearing gas masks to cope, then perhaps it is not so ridiculous as first seems! And just to be clear by tonnage I am given to understand this is tonnage of stored gas, including packaging and delivery system, rather than pure gas tonnage!

Very Quite in Fethiye, a couple of days ago there was a rally in the town square, a peaceful event, the biggest noise was from a party political speech from the opposition, some guy with a microphone.! most people here are busy getting on with there work.
imo opinion there are always demonstrations in Istanbul and this one has been bumped up by the media, Though I do think that Erdogan has run his course.
Bye the way it was the UK that sold Turkey the tear gas.!
