on a previous post I was having a mid range power problem with my 63Ps. As per forum advice (thanks all) I had port engine turbo refurbished, new wastegate etc. Company who did the job thought the exhaust housing was OK and did not need any work. Just refitted it this week and there was only a very slight improvement.

So being somewhat disappointed I decided to swap the turbos from the other engine. I swapped everything from the exhaust elbow to the charge cooler. Spent a day and swapped them over. Went out for a test run and still no improvement. Local engineer (very helpful - lent me his rev counter and wouldn´t take any money) reckons that both turbos have tired exhaust housings. All I seem to have achieved is that I thought I had one tired turbo, it seems I have two. Only solution is either new turbos, or if I can find them exhaust housings. Anyone know where I might find such a thing?

63p's are in our boat and I have just looked that 63p manual and there isn't any reference to something called "exhaust housing". Maybe if you can give some more details we might be able to offer some help.

I guess it means the turbocharger exhaust housing, ie the exhaust side of the turbo casing thing. Never heard of one wearing out though, it's thick cast iron. It's usually the bearings that go or the turbine itself.

confused.

There's a lot more to check before spending lots on new turbos, what's the boost pressure ?, start with the basics and work through.

Surely no improvement means that wasn't the problem. You swapped the turbo from your good engine right?

Rather than throw money away trying to replace items suggested by random dudes off the Internet get a trusted specialist along to diagnose and hopefully fix the problem. You have quite common engines so someone experienced should know all the signs to look for and likely causes.

Good luck in solving the problem.

One other thing to keep in mind is the state of the hull. Growth can really hinder engines resulting in a boat which can't quite get up on the plane and engines under revving. I used to notice a big difference on my Phantom 42 fitted with Volvo 63P engines. Sorry if I'm stating the obvious and it was the first thing you checked :)

Does sound like some very questionable advice from the engineer.

Turbo's generally have very few issues. Either leaking oil seals (oil usage and blue smoke) or worn bearings (excessive movement in turbines and excessive noise).

If in doubt i'd get an automotive turbo specialist to inspect the turbo.

As has already been mentioned the thing to do is to check their actual performance in terms of boost pressure. I'd be using a marine specialist rather than an automotive one. They will have the necessary test equipment and know what to do.

There's nothing worse than paying for someone's learning curve. Volvo Paul on here would be my first port of call to get the job sorted.

Henry :)

I would check the simple things first.

How weedy is the hull, if you can see weed it needs a clean.

While you are about it, check you have not got rope or a net around a prop and that the props have not been damaged by a strike or debris

Have you checked your fuel system do you have crud or the bug, is the fuel pulling easily through to the prefilter?

Are your air filters clean do they need replacing ?

I have had 63p's in two boats, simple robust engines if looked after they are faithful to you.

I have had a stuck wastegate and I have spent a lot of time and money looking at a fuel pump problem to find it was a bent prop and shaft.

Are you sure technician (not engineer) you are speaking to is not a boiler repair man, their approach is generally to rip into problems starting with the most expensive component first.

If you have had turbo rebuilt by reputable company the turbine housing will have been vapour blasted and internal tolerance checked before rebuild, it was either IN or OUT of tolerance 'tired' is not in the book.

As to the setting of your boost capsule I am not so sure, Volvopaul seems to be aware of an issue regarding sensitivity of waste-gate boost capsule setting.

'buy genuine wastegate as the opening pressure is set by vp as a spare part so it wont be wrong, I use 2 companies to have turbos overhauled local to the midlands, I find the southcoast agents mentioned very expensive compared to what I pay up here'.

We appear to be attempting engine diagnostics by way of the one legged man approach. IF people want to do their own trouble shooting a few basic tools cost very little. Hand held tacho off Ebay and a 50 psi pressure gauge and some tubing.

Pull a boost curve at 200 rpm increments off the good engine, then do the same on the engine which has lacklustre mid range performance.

Data solves problems not opinions.
