Arrived in Yarmouth yesterday after a nice crossing from Hamble, not many people out and great fun. Some video taken and will post at some stage, the trip felt like a non event as although rough Tulana sliced through nicely. Then just off Yarmouth pier oil pressure alarm sounded for 2 seconds, then went off, oil pressure gauge fluctuating! Aim was to get into Yarmouth ASAP, loads of boats around, wind gusting 40knots blowing boats sideways and had fun time avoiding, went straight round and moored up. Opened up engine cover and oil everywhere!!! Found oil pipe to oil cooler had worn against another and eventually holed. Cleaned up oil, about 10litres worth.... Removed oil cooler pipes and another 10 litres of coolant then emptied itself into the engine bilges and had to be cleaned up. Today our friends took us to Newport, got new pipe made up for £28 . Got 20litres of shell rimula for £54, pipe fitted, fluids filled, engine ran up and levels checked. Tulana ready to fight another day!

Oh dear , I just hope running her with no oil pressure hasn't damaged the crank and bearings James, take it easy and listen before you open her up on the way back. I'm currently in Weymouth but Yarmouth bound on Thursday so will look you up if we get there.

I know, have run up tonight and got to temp, she sounds smooth and "normal". It's all I can do, as well as a small pray.

When She dropped oil pressure, lowest reading 2bar

Hi James

Pleased all is OK my best wishes to your family
Paul and Angie

Thanks Paul, just one of those things you don't want to happen, especially the first day of your holiday.

If it had to happen anywhere, off Yarmouth pier wasn't a bad location... Just hope it is all ok, i was feeling quite happy and pleased of my fix before VP's post...

James

Glad you got it fixed, if you still had 2 bar should be fine I would think. Exactly which pipe was it?

Thanks Ben, port side of engine, immediately under engine fuel filters there is the oil cooler effectively built into the side of the engine block, see image below, you will see rectangle directly under twin fuel filters, has vertical pressing lines on it, there are two pipes entering cooler one on the left you can see, one on the right which you can just see the collar of between a v if 2 rubber pipes , it was that one. I took them both off, but only one needed changing.

Thanks James, I'll have a careful inspection.

Had a similar problem on our old S37, can't believe how long it took to clean the engine bay lol.

Glad all is ok

Thanks Andy, it was a PITA cleaning the oil up, even though it was fairly contained there is never much room to get your arms under an engine! Then undid the pipe and due to the fact the studs holding the pipe were attached through the oil cooler when the pipe came off it released about 10litres of coolant which I then had the job of cleaning up, and that stuff did get everywhere! But this is what we enjoy do on holiday..... Isn't it?

Hope your boat is all fixed now?

Maybe lucky it didn't happen off Lymington. Experience suggests that an unsupervised spouse released into the shopping zone with several hours to fill whilst the damage to the boat is fixed can be the really expensive ingredient in the mix...
