Tube heaters

Any thoughts on where I could buy a tube heater to go in the engine compartment during the cold weather. I have tried both Maplins and B&Q.

CEF were the most competetively priced a few weeks ago. They seem pretty widespread.

scewfix ! I have a couple of these on board at the moment. you need to buy a plug for them and mount on a block of wood to give some support.

def mount on boards - if you see these installed in outdoor toilet blocks (a favourite location) you'll see the scorch marks on the wall where they have radiated heat over time .... replace the board easy enough ....

You need a thermostat switch to control them - if you use a time switch and the yard has a power cut your clock will be wrong

as they are very low Wattage just leave it on 24/7

Since its an engine compartment that you are interested in heating I would go for a 60 Watt tubular. My mate has a Hunter Horizon with one in the cabin and its always warm and dry for minium cost.

Agreed- mine is 80W, sits on a couple of blocks and is on 24/7 from Nov- Mar- costs next to nothing

bought 3 60w tube heaters from TLC just before Christmas.

£42 including delivery and arrived before I could tell my wife that I'd ordered them.
I made ply bases to mount them on and leave them on 24/7
at 60w each they don't throw out much heat so ignore the rubbish about timers and thermostats.

I mounted mine on a board that I first covered with foil and wired it through an old central heating thermostat that I leave set to about 3 degrees.

I recant. I am wrong. I deserve to be banished. Even at the 180W my heater draws, and even at the price the yard sells electricity, a time switch or thermostat is not cost effective!
