TSS/Separation zones?

You are quite correct Sailfree - that is exactly what you should do. Twister - I do not need Rule 10 rammed down my throat. As a professional master mariner I can assure you I had to learn my rules verbatim - and all the associated law (including very interesting case law) that went with them. I have spent a considerable amount of time as a senior officer on cross channel ferries crossing the Dover TSS often having to deal with those who have little knowledge of the Collision Regs. Read Rule 10c and 10e again. I argue that it does not have to be written expressly. Good seamanship, common sense and the provisions of these clauses dictate otherwise.

the wording is ' as nearly as practicable to 90 degrees' I would therefore suggest that if you have a motor you would use it to comply. If no motor then a discussion with the coastguard would probably avoid a unwanted call from them on the VHF

[/ QUOTE ] So how does a sailing vessel with no engine cross a TSS if at 90° to the traffic flow the wind is from dead ahead.

It may be good seamanship to drop sails and use engine but where does it state that this is what you should do. I accept its probably more practical with modern boats and powerful engines but I am not sure of older sailing boats with auxillary engines.

And assuming it is allowed to sail in a TSS who is the stand on vessel? Sorry just read Severnmans more detailed reply "boats under 20m shall not impede a power vessel proceding in a TSS.

Its threads like this that providing no one posts completly wrong info are so educational!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Really my last shout on this folks! MCGA Marine Guidance Note 364 refers to the Dover TSS. Note section 2.3 and 2.11. 2.3 refers to the MCGA's view that a vessel should cross a 'TSS' at right angles - not just a lane but the whole damn caboosh. 2.11 may clear up your point Sailfree - or it may not!! Available on the MCGA website.
