After casting my vote in the Oz elections I went for a look at the school's jumble sale. I resolved many years ago not to buy any more books, but this rule is broken every now and again. I spotted these gems and could not resist. A couple are those yachting classics which are quoted in books but one almost never sees.

Ann Davison,1953, Last Voyage hard times, hard sailing.
??????, 1945, Dangerous Voyage
WW2 vet sails from Panama to Oz to rejoin his war bride. gets wrecked.
Marin Marie, 1945, Wind Aloft solo sailor and artist crosses oceans.
Felix Riesenberg,1950, Cape Horn sailing ships n iron men.
L.T.C. Rolt, 1946, Narrow Boat travel on canals
Robert Gibbings, Coming Down the Seine travel on the river.
G.G. Carter,1947, Looming Lights life on light ships.
Robert Graves, 1952, The Isles of Unwisdom novel about spanish explorer
Joshua Slocum, 1949, Sailing Alone around the World orig pub 1900

the books above are small format hardcovers published by The Readers Union, sold to members only. Cheap editions but quite sturdy, woulda been ideal for a ships reading shelf. The pages have aged to a light khaki colour but are not brittle.

I have finished reading the Ann D Last Voyage. It was quite depressing, about how The War sodded up their business and post-war conditions sodded up their later businesses and their live-aboard sail-away project. They got way into debt and decided to depart the UK and try to earn money somewhere else. Then things got worse.

In addition, I bought
Gavin Maxwell, 1957, God Protect Me from my Friends true story of a Sicilian Bandit
Conan Doyle,1996, Great Tales, collection of short stories
Helen Demidenko,1994, The Hand that Signed the Paper notorious novel
Holton & Pye,1974, Creating Calculus math text
Gavin Souter, 1976, Lion and Kangaroo history, Aus soc'y 1900-1919
VCR tape, 200?, The Far Western Sound choral singers of Cornwall

I paid 20 cents each for these. Charity shops charge 20 cents to 50 cents in Australia, sometimes more.

Dangerous Voyage is by John Cauldwell I think, I have a copy in my library.

I suspect Rolt is highly collectable, he is seen as the father of the resurection of the UK canal system.

Ann Davison went on to buy Felicity Ann & sail solo to America (first female solo crossing) and wrote a book about that too. Considering her previuos nautical experiences she was one plucky lady. She also seemed to learn a lot from her earlier mistakes.
