Hi,

I am having terrible troubles with a new Mercruiser/GM engine purchased from a company in the west country. It broke under warranty.

I am wondering if anyone else has had issues and might like to share information. Maybe there is a bad batch of engines out there.

Feel free to PM me and I'll get in contact to share details.

Terry

If you a warranty issue and your supplying dealers isn't playing ball just get In touch with barrus uk.

It could be a Vortec he's bought to replace original Mercruiser

Yes, perhaps a bit more complex however as there are are so many variations between block only and full engine. First recourse would be supplier and if RP, I've only heard good things thus far (considering them myself so have asked around!). If it's a short block, then there are all sorts of possible issues with mix of old and new parts, setup etc... Would be interesting to know more!

Yes I agree, we need to know a bit more info, I have had engines from RP and found to be good.

I can't really say a lot about this at the moment except that I'd like to know if I have an isolated engine failure.
It is a GM engine straight off the marine production line supplied by a UK importer.

Fair comments and understand the reasons. I'll likely be looking at the Volvo re-power 5.7 at some stage to replace a 5.0, but they're all GM's underneath so would be interested in the outcome. Hope it all works out for you and whilst I'm sure the warranty will be good, it doesn't really compensate all the hassle of taking in and out plus the time etc...

why are you not going back to supplier or do you think its common

Terry, Perhaps it would be fair to all on here to post a link to your thread on the BOC. This would give everyone a reasonably opportunity to understand the FULL history of your engine since August last year.

yep, I've probably stepped the mark but then, as you found, it wasn't hard to find once Swordfish had mentioned it so if I get grief, I'll blame him lols ;)

Thanks oGarryo !! perhaps I did open up this can of worms, but as I have said, it is only fair to have all the information before commenting on the cause of engine failure.

Fwiw, I've had 2 boats with the 5.7 block, and both proved very reliable.
Besides, it's a very popular engine (both in Merc and VP flavours, carb or efi) for small lake boats, and various friends of mine also had/have boats with some of those engines, but I can't remember any of them to have ever suffered engine troubles.
...as opposed to outdrive problems, particularly with VP duoprops, but that's another matter.
Best of luck!

PS: just for the records, I did hear of manifolds/risers leakages, which in the worst case can be lethal for the block, but only in old(ish) boats always used in salt water.
Can't imagine that happening in a new engine, still under warranty...

Got bored last night so I had a run through the linked thread.

If it is the OP, then there is a huge amount of further information on there. Its important to note that the problem is not with an original equipment Mercruiser, but with a non OE replacement block and head. Its very complicated and includes a partial sinking, rebuild with old ancillaries, at least 2 insurance companies, a couple of firms trying to do their best and a lot of DIY by the OP.

I do feel for the OP, he has spent a boat load of money and still doesnt have a running engine. Good luck to him, but I would suggest that anyone wanting to help scans through the other thread first.
