TroJan batterys, final question for opions

Well, our thruster's fused at 300A (which is scary enough in itself). So +1.

Slight thread drift, and apologies for that, but that's precisely the reason I won't leave our 340W of panels to look after the batteries for extended periods. 20W, maybe, but the idea of leaving 25A unsupervised for months on end I find, frankly, frightening.Same with a mains charger, come to that.
Yep, learnt that lesson! We now plan to leave just 80w of solar to look after 1150 amp hours of battery during the summer whilst we are home. 1150 is two 125 amp hr starter batteries and 900 amp hr domestic bank.

How big a solar panel array would I need to keep 8 x T145 batteries charged?

As liveaboard we manage pretty well on 380w of solar and a duogen for when its windy. We dont have a stern arch but we have four 75w panels that live on the guard wires. Two per side. We also have a pair of 40w roving panels that live on top of the stackpack when at anchor and lashed to the granny bars when sailing. The large panels stay pointing into the sun whilst sailing even in 30 kts of wind. Mounting panels this way is pretty popular in the Caribbean.

Is you question abut keeping them charged whilst the boat is idle, or while in use? If the latter, it's impossible to say without a clear idea of typical drains on them, not to mention the climate where the boat happens to be.

If the former, the Trojan website should give an idea of the usual self-discharge rate for T145s. Base your panel wattage on that. Lead-antimony batteries (like your Trojans) have a higher self-discharge rate than lead-calcium, but even so the panel would not need to be particularly large - parhaps 40W or so. (Caution: that's a finger-in-the-air guess.) Obviously you need a margin to compensate for cloudy days.

I destroyed 3 x 110Ah £70 batteries in 1 year 2012/13 then I destroyed 3 x 110Ah Varta hobby in 2 years 2013/15, and I have now destroyed 4 x Trojan T105s in 2 years 2015/16.
I have a NASA BM2, and a Smartguage and am quite anal about batteries and charging. ..............
If you get through batteries at that rate I can only think there is something you are doing to them that most people don't!
