Trogir to Jelsa

Hi everyone, I am new to the site and very sorry if I have probably put this article under the wrong thread. I will be hiring a lagoon 42 and sailing from Trogir next month, we can board at 1PM and I was wondering if feasible to sail to Jelsa on the island of Hvar before sundown? Would this be too much to try to do in a single day?

I've taken charter boats out of Trogir several times, and although you can board at a nominal 1.0 pm, there will be a hand over, check-list to go through, provisions to buy, etc, I don't think I've ever got away before 4 pm, so that would mean a late arrival in Jelsa. We normally go to Sutivan on the NE corner of Brac, for several reasons.
Its close, only couple of hours at most, it is not visited by charter boats, it is very un-touristy and very much overlooked. I probably should not draw attention to it really.
Downside is the harbour is small, but the folk are friendly and we have always squeezed in, twice rafting up alongside fishing boats, couple of times actually managed to get back to the quay.

About 40 miles so I would forget about it on the first day. It will be a stressful day with a late arrival and that is definitely not what you want for your first day.

Milna at the west end of Brac would be reasonable at 20 miles and is en route to Jelsa or, depending on the wind, you could take the more westerly route past Solta in which case Maslinica would be en route.

My immediate thought too. I suppose you could purchase supplies earlier or even take them with you depending on your logistics. But I agree the inventory and technical handover should be skippered, not skipped or skimped!

(I think it was on a Croatia trip that we just accepted the handover assertion that we had a full gas bottle in addition to the one in use. When we emptied the one in use in the middle of cooking a supper the "full" one turned out to be empty!)

Thanks for the advice, I had thought it would probably be too far even if I picked up supplies beforehand. Thanks for confirming and for your advice, now just to find some good restaurants with moorings on Hvar and Vis

Remember that they are likely to have a good number of boats out to charter and the from 1pm is just a guide and it may take more time for them to get to you. Some charterers offer an early handover for an additional fee and there are victualling companies who can supply all your food etc ... again at a price.

Maslinca on Solta is an easy couple of hours but fills up pretty quickly but there is a nice sheltered bay to the South called Sesula with buoys and a bar/restaurant. If going into Milna can recommend the Marina Vlaska on the North side just before the town. It's much quieter than the town itself with good facilities.

we have paid for early boarding (1PM rather than 4PM)but I think you are all right and that even if we stock up beforehand it will still be too much to reach Jelsa that evening.

Just relax and enjoy your self. Most time’s winds are very light so long distance = more motoring. It’s paradise if you just go a few miles each day starting late and finishing early in a good berth. Don’t miss Split. If you are looking for noisy party atmosphere go to Havr town otherwise avoid it. If you do go there are only a few mooring buoys so get there just after lunch.
