Having enjoyed Tristan Jones autobiographical collection "yarns" over the winter I decided to do an internet search to find out more about this remarkable man when I came across an expose of TJ claiming that he did not travel to many of the places he mentions, that he did not meet those other notables he claims to have met and the incidents he describes on his travels are distortions of the truth!!!
I'm completely gobsmacked!
Is there any merit in his books or should they be classified under "fairytales and other fiction?"

Well I do care. It's called telling lies. Suppose you were tied up somewhere passing the time having a nice chin-wag with someone who was recounting their adventures to you and you were informed afertwards -well acutally that guy invented half of what he told you - would you not feel cheated? I was telling friends of mine (from Wales!!) about this amazing character and his exploits. "yarns" was a god read until I discovered what a phony he was. I don't think i will read any more of his stuff. Time to get out on the boat!

Judge for yourself: "Incredible Voyage" he reckons he pulled his boat through the jungle. Debutantes weigh over a ton.....

[/ QUOTE ]hee hee... not only that, they fought off snakes, killed a Crocodile with an axe and fed themselves on mouldy beans from behind the cooker...... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

'Marchen' - They are clearly not intended to be understood as true. The stories are full of clearly defined incidents, and peopled by rather flat characters with little or no interior life. ( Wikipedia )

So what do you really want? Truth, justice and a bigger slice of pizza....?

Happily, your over reaction to the provenance of the TJ stories is made trivial by the joy that so many have had in reading him. Including, apprently, yourself before some kind of self righteousness took an unreasoning grip on you.

Welcome to the world...with a little effort you too can join in the fun...

I'll second that!......funny how somebody pops up out of the woodwork every now and again feeling that they have been "cheated" by old TJ /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think that a lot of this problem is caused by publishers hype from over the years, the bollix that has appeared on the covers of TJ's books, put there by various publishers in order to sell more books.

Some of his books are just tales, some are fictionalisd fact, some are fact...........what does it matter? If reading them has given so much pleasure to so many. There is a very good website all about TJ, and it's a worts an' all job, which I think gives a pretty fair assesment of the man, and his writings. As it's all there for folks to see, it's a bit of a puzzle to me as to why we get posts along the lines of the leading one on this thread? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If I discovered that an account of an adventure, which had certainly passed itself off as a true account was not in fact so - I would feel that I had been duped - no matter how well-written, but I suppose this is all a sign of the times when there is no premium placed on veracity. Factual writing and fiction should be clearly demarcated.
TJ must have obviously gaining awe and popularity which was not his due - not mine as I had not read any of his writings.
SAWDOC you have an ally.

You obviously did not read my post properly did you? As for TJ, he has noted in many of his books usually on the inside covers that some of his books are fictionalised fact, some are factual, and some are just yarns........I also said that there is a website where you can find out all you want about TJ, the good and the not so good. Publishers have in some cases embellished the covers of his books (since his death I might add) with some right old tripe, as I said, just to sell more books. Maybe you shouldn't be so hard in your judgement of the man, seeing as how you appear to not know very much about him, or could it be that you are just suffering from a fairly severe case of head up botty? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Aren't they a bit of both? Bit like Ian Flemming and James Bond. Good reads, some fact and some embellishment.

Still enjoy them though.

PS Father Christmas and the Tooth Fairy are not real.

He was a fraudster, even told "true" stories of his time in the RN, being torpedoed etc. (which infuriated many ex RN) they were defended by him as true, but he was caught out on several occasions, yes a good read, but why try and tell all and sundry they were true stories? A cad, a liar plain and simple.

I had the pleasure? of spending quite a few days in Istanbul on his trimaran with him back in the early eighties. Boat was a mouldy mess, rig very out of tune and he had no idea how to set things up.. Had to run in the end as I could not take any more bull**** and living in the sty was revolting
