Trim sensor replacement - one for VolvoPaul??

My boat is being prepared by the boatyard in Sardinia. Apparently the trim sensor no longer works. Is this common? Anyway, they want €537.90 to get the part and install it. Sounds like my Italian boat keeping friend is "taking the living pisa" to me!!

Not even sure i need the trim sensor working, if it was £100 to get it working fine, but £500 seems a lot.

The engine is a 5.7 VolvoPenta petrol unit in a Cranchi CSL 27.

Usual start of the season frustrations.

I had one fail on a D6 / DPH leg combi.

It will come as not real surprise that there is an "improved" part for this. Given how long VP hve been in this business the number of "improved parts" always amazes me.

It took about an hour to change from memory ... but I dont recall what it cost.

I need to know which drive model For a guess an SX twin prop . ??
 
If its the SX drive with the Volvo/OMC transom shield then its a royal PIA to change as there is a small steel hairgrip clip inside the transom deep down under the steering ram which holds a rubber plug in place through which go the trim sender cables, getting it out isn't too bad or getting the new cable in, but getting the clip on requires the patience of Job. The only way with out removing anything is with a mirror and light to see what you are doing, then I found the only way is to grip the clip hard in small size long nose molegrips other wise you WILL drop the clip and it WILL fall down under the exhaust never to be seen again and not retrievable with a magnet as its stainless! I've replaced them 3 times and that's enough for me.

This sounds very familiar, I thought it was just my incompetence with the clip !

2 solutions;

Mine: Use the original cables, but use glue lined heat shrink crimp connectors : their waterproofness seems seem to outlast that of the trim sensors

A US colleagues solution; mount the cable on the transom and drill a hole in the transom to pass the cable through ( seems a good way to do it !)
 
+1 I have spliced the cables when access was too bad or the customer wanted it done as cheap as poss, through the transom is new one!
