May I introduce you to "metal migration". This is a 20 year old at least, fully explained failure mode of silicon devices. Basically the atoms in the wires when subjected to high currents decide it is time for a holiday and take no more part in the conduction. Slowly the device gets worse until a hot spot develops and then failure.

As for putting any body parts over the input of a massive air pump I am beginning to loose the will to live! Do it with a piece of wood if you have to but ...

Yep.....Saab engines used a cigarette inserted into the cylinder and a hydraulic ram to turn the crankshaft.

These fitted to many Survival craft.

Spares were obtained from one of those remote outposts....Achiltiebue , god only knows where it is.
