Treguier marina, Brittany

Thanks Piers, very useful.

One comment caught my eye:

"......The second concerns the tidal flow which can move through the pontoons just as quickly, if not quicker, than that at Roscoff. It’s emphasised by the HM that mooring should only ever be attempted into the current."

Where did you have in mind, in Roscoff? The new marina?

Interesting review. We recently passed through Treguier by car and contemplated a future visit by boat but thought it was a bit featureless and uninspiring. However, your write-up has changed my mind and we might well put it on the future cruising map.

good review.

we spent three days there this summer.

the staff were really helpful, Le Ponton restaurant was remarkably cheap and the food good.

The only problem was that Treguier was a place I wouldnt visit again. It was as if the town had been abandoned. At least 30% of the shops had closed down and there really wasnt much to see aside of the Catherdral.

I guess he is referring to the new marina at Roscoff - which by it's design allows the tide to flow through and can catch ( it did me this year ) the unaware.

At Tregiuer the pontoons are at an angle - so making it more fun

Having said that we visited on the 14th July last year and had a ringside seat to the Bastille day fireworks - it was one of the best nights and places we visited during a 3 week cruise.

Thread drift but we were in St Malo for Bastille day. The display was absolutely brilliant.
14th July will feature in next years planning.

I would add where to reprovision.
I can't remember the name or exactly where it is of the Supermarche but turn left at the top of the walkways and walk along the main road.

Yes, the "Super-U" Supermarket is located up the Boulevard Jean Guehenno, up the steepish hill from the Pont Canada roundabout about 1.6km SW of the marina. Walking back down the hill is much easier of course!

I would agree that the town is perhaps not the most exciting in all of France, but it doesn't matter. Spend a couple of hours in the amazing chandlery and then have dinner in Le Ponton. That alone is enough to make it more than worth a visit.

Yes. I noted it in my posting on Roscoff Bloscon marina here: http://www.playdeau.com/roscoff-bloscon-marina/

There were two accidents in Treguier whilst I was there. One yacht tried mooring with the current and had a MOB situation (I'm posting this on my website shortly) and another where a yacht, again mooring with the tide, t-boned itself on a finger and badly damaged its lovely wooden hull.

Both would could have been avoided by mooring into the current

The only supermarket we're aware of it at the top of the square and to the right past the cathedral. Sadly, though, it's closed down! However, the other small shops were able to provide all we needed, and the Wednesday market sells everything from day old chicks to ten year old calvados!

Very interesting. Forewarned is forearmed.

I have been in there a couple of times and never noticed undue tidal flow, must have been neaps. I shall take more notice in future.

I think the HM must dispair it happens so often. A yacht came out of the finger next to me and immediately turned 90 degrees in full current. Amazing what happened next... Fortunately, for me, most of the prang and the next half our were on the end of the next mobo and not me. A rather skilled HM managed to drag him off us both with his launch, clearly demonstrating that he had some practice at this.

A warning. On our first visit some clown thought he could beat the full flood by entering between the first two pontoons at full speed. After he had come to rest. He walked back along our, downstream, pontoon collecting details for insurance purposes.
