I was back talking to my engineer friend today, he recommended "Clessetite Thread Sealant", so I bought a tube.
The labeling say suitable for metallic pipework and fittings, Natural Gas, LPG, Potable Water.
It's an Anaerobic paste with PTFE, good to 20bar and from -55 to 150 deg C
The practical feedback is that it's good for hydraulics and diesel.
The instructions say degrease, and apply to the first three threads of the male fitting and don't over tighten.
I'm going to give it a go, I don't have the luxury of redesigning the system so that is all compression fittings and banjo fittings, I have to live with what's there, starting with parallel threaded sockets welded into the top of the tank.
