Has anyone any views or experiences of the need for travel insurance in Europe, especially Portugal and Grand Canaria. Also onward to the Carribean?

Thanks

Ian

Hi Ian,

The standard E111 form, recently changed so that you need to get a new one each year with a marked expiry date, entitles you to the same standard of state-provided care in each EU country that their own citizens get. While this is better than no cover, it may well fall short of both your expectations and needs!

My personal view is that medical insurance, certainly for the Caribbean is essential. GH insurance do a specific policy, with up to a year away at a time, for those on yachts. ( GH Insurance ) .

Like most insurance policies you hope you will never need to use it but the cost of medical care can easily ruin your day /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

As an ex hospital manager who has worked in Spain etc I would say that for practical purposes for a yachtie forget government hospitals via E111 in Spain, Portugal. The delays and hassle can make the UK NHS look positively instant! GP services can be OK. In W'indies you don't really have a choice at all. Assuming that you will still have entitlement to UK NHS services, the cheapest insurance cover is often a plane ticket to UK with a minimum policy to cover treatments for accidents. For that do shop round, prices vary by huge amounts. Also read the small print and follow it to the letter if you have to use it.
