I'm thinking about getting a Trapper, either the 500 or the 300. Does anyone have any particular comments on them, and are there any particular weaknesses I need to be aware of? Cheers

I sailed a Trapper 300 of my mates, and borrowed it for cross channel trips. Sturdily made, but small for a 25 footer. Also nicely finished down below given the small volume of the hull.
Bit cramped in the cockpit, and comfortable for 2 of us on a weeks holiday in London (St Kats!). Raced it in the Medway and off Ramsgate usually with 4 or 5 crew.

Goes well with the masthead rig, and always felt safe.

Just bought a Trapper 500 in December. Looked around at loads of different makes/ models and Trapper 500 was the best by a long chalk. Plenty of room for a 27 footer and not too pricey. Performance is very good, boat is quick on most points of sail. I researched the Trappers quite carefully and also had an insight from our surveyor who saw many of them being built. General feeling is that they are undervalued in the second hand market - but do shop around as the finish in the interior is a bit variable. Good luck with your search - you won't regret it if you buy a 500 and stay in touch if you do!!!!!!!!

I have a Trapper 500 for sale, a 1977, beautifully restored in 2005. New interior, instruments, sails, etc...
She is lying in Belgium. For pictures check my website: http://www.freewebs.com/trapper500/fotosbanzai.htm

Things to look out for when buying secondhand are leaks around the stanchion bases and the deck/hull joint.

The Trapper 500 is a very pleasant family cruiser, we did enjoy her very much.

It may be worthwhile to take a look at the following websites:
http://www.voy.com/106963/
and http://www.voilelec.com/pages/b_trapp.php (if you understand French)
and http://www.cc27association.com/index.html the site of C&C, the Canadian (and original) version of the Trapper 500.

Good luck!

regards,

Erwin

M first "proper yacht the 300. Enjoyed it hugely. Used to race her regularly around the solent and a couple of "round the island"`s as well. used to have a very good class assoc but that was a long while ago.
As someone else remarked they are a bit tight below and also tender -- lots of them had a keel extension of about 9" added which made quite a differance.
Sailed a mates 500 many times and that has much much more room inside. Looks a lot more like a cruiser that the 300 but it`s performance is remarkably good.
I`d say the one for sale looks in very good nick .You could probably get a good model of each for say £10000 and £15000 respectively.

Just to update those links, the Trapper owners Association has a new website and a new domain name, www.trapperyachts.org.uk

The voy board mentioned is linked to from there as an archive, but any new postings should be made to the new forum linked to the site.

There is also a link to the Trapper 300 Owners association website.
