Transatlantic crewing

Hello everyone,

I'm a Day Skipper interested in crewing on the ARC or RAC in November then onwards from the Caribbean.

I'm 32, an extremely physically fit non-smoker, a first aid and dive instructor with general cooking skills, a sunny disposition and plenty of enthusiasm! I'm willing to meet and sail beforehand if required (and of course discuss financial arrangements), and wondered if anyone knew of any opportunities.

You might do well to start by looking at the boats coming back from ARC03, as plenty of them will be looking for crew April/May. That experience could easily gain you a place on the next ARC.

you may get lucky on the arc website, i took on 3 crew through it in 2001. be warned that there are hundreds of people competing for a very limited number of berths. your best chance is to look for boats that need crew to get to las palmas as most would-be crew are only interested in the crossing. once you're on board you have a chance to prove yourself.

there are quite a few boats needing crew coming the other way and there are fewer people available to fill those places. the problem is that there is no big focus like the arc. arc europe is a much smaller affair. if you're out there already, jolly harbour and english harbours have a lot of boats leaving for europe as do st maarten and tortola. the best time is after antigua race week.

Thanks to everyone who posted their ideas; any more will be gratefully received! As a result of your advice I've already been in contact with some skippers and have a much better idea of the questions I need to bear in mind.
