Not got any direct dealings but have heard great things about them, even from chats with the harbour master, who shares the same building.

They are expanding which must be a good sign. Have a few nice looking ribs which always seem well taken care of.

I have overheard their briefings while launching my tender or packing the car and they always seem friendly and the students seem happy. There is generally a lot of laughing going on which is a good sign IMO.

The few encounters I have had with the trainers have always been courteous. i.e. they will never bully us in the tender when launching the ribs and never hog the wall if we are coming in the boat or tender. Always a cheerful 'mornin' or greeting.

From what I have seen as an impartial outside observer they seem a great outfit and talking to punters on the slipways after a day out, they always seem happy and excited.

Don't know if this is any help as I have not actually trained with them, but thought I would add some ditties. If anyone from the school is reading this, can I have a trip out in that big black rib you have, the one with inboards, pleaaaassseeeee!

If you live in the area and disagree dont shoot the messenger I am only conveying my mates opinion.

One of our reasons for leaving Pwhelli was the dire attitude of the locals. Spend your money and F Off, they told us among other comments! Locals could park on double yellow lines some days. Visitors could not. The pubs and hotels mostly dumps. Looks like it has not changed much!!

Actually Haydn, Pwllheli has changed. I'm not just saying that, and as you know, my boat is Porthmadog based, so I am agnostic on this.

The real problem with Pwllheli was (and the clue here is in the tense "was") the fact that it had the most awful, truly awful, Butlitz holiday camp just outside the town. The scum, the absolute SCUM that used to arrive from various cess-pool parts of the UK were enough to drive any local Welshman berzerk. Now that it has gone (and been turned into a caravan park) Pwllheli is all the more better a place for it.

However... the marina is still 5 times (yes, that's 5 times) the cost of Porthmadog. So that's a good enough reason not to be there.

Oh. I used to enjoy my holidays at Butlins when I was a kid. I learned to sail a rowing boat at Pwhelli Butlins, Father was a strict Methodist!!

Big probem, when I had the boat there, apart from the locals and dire pubs, standing up for welsh national anthem every five minutes, closing on a sunday, Shutting at 11 when licenced till twelve, taking the beer away!

Tuther thing was. The next decent habour was Wicklow in Ireland. All very nice but nowt in between. So nearly every trip was Wicklow or Dunleary 90 miles, long way in a p33!!

But I miss Ireland.

I am really pleased to see that you think that changing the Butlins to a caravan park has made the town a better place, - I will pass on your sentiments to the General Manager at Hafan-Y-Mor as I am one of the Customer Service Managers for Bourne Leisure Group (the parent company) and will be seeing him after the New Year.

Haydn, the Butlins you used to enjoy as a kid, just isn't the same animal (sic) as the one that was dutifully exterminated a few short years ago.

The place I took my kids to on a Saturday morning (just the one mind!) still had drunks from the night before "slugging it out" in a drink fuelled rage. Dozens of windows were broken with glass on the floor. And the tattooed, knuckle dragging, neanderthal women were something to see to be believed.

It ain't often that places change for the better - but this is certainly one such occasion.

And yes - Ireland is a long way for a day or two out, especially if you get caught out in bad weather. As you say, nice though. Ever been to Arklow? Relatively new marina there.

I did my RYA II training with two of my friends with these guys in October. Great time, really nice bunch and very proffesional. We had awful seas, but they gave us so much confidence we never at any time felt worried, despite having to do 'man overboard' in appaling conditions!

Accomodation was limited in the area, but the price was good, and we will use them for VHF and CEVNI, plus Day Skipper.

Sorry, it's been sold. The Volvo D3 was a bit of a b*gger to get spares for which is a shame because the boat was a good training vessel.

Thanks for the kind words about the school. We do get a big kick out of sending people home happy as well as more competent. It might sound a bit corny but all the instructors enjoy what they do and hopefully this enthusiasm passes down to the students.

We can also recommend the best accomodation deals as I'd agree that some of the local hostelries would be more suited to the gulag.
