Trailer Yacht - How Bigs Too Big or Too Small?

Even if your trailer sailer is a bit bigger than 20ft you can always use it's facilitiesto help with the towing, and cut down on the tow car fuel consumption.

In Australia I used to own a 25foot 7.8m lift keel yacht.weight on the trailer was 2.5-3 tons.

I used to cruise about 90-100 days a year and towed the boat by road about 7000km a year.

Australia's roads are generally wider, but with a well set up rig towing a larger boat regularly worked well.

towing is easy

it is the recovery that is the hard bit

The recovery on to the trailer was very easy. A few mins at most. If you took longer than that the ramp users would soon get annoyed.
With a strong crosswind and no finger pontoon, particularly with current in the same direction it required some good team work between my wife and myself, but it was no more difficult than berthing a boat in a tight marina.
The trailer was galvanised with a break back design. Most boats this size used an electric trailer winch, but I only had a hand winch.

i would like to know how big a motor and tow limits are for your 4x4 is first, and how big is too big, or too small a boat you might like.

Big as you like, 1960 SeriesII Land Rovers can pull coaches up hills and check out this Defender pulling the 12 tonne lorry... Oh you mean legally, plenty of websites giving advice on that!

Keep watching until 1.15 and see the guy reach in to an empty vehicle and start the engine  anti-stall does the rest ;)

You don't need a Defender, the previous owner of my boat (2 tonnes ish!) pulled it across the country up to Scotland etc with a 2 litre SAAB. Funny as we have the same SAAB but I'm not sure I would want to tow with it again. We used to have a caravan and it moved the car around so much the kids used to get sea sick (up & down and side to side - poor rear shocks etc on these!) the Defender is rock solid at the back as you would expect. The SAAB has been demoted to daily commute for my wife!
