Tragedy for one of our Community

Good God how unbelievably tragic; simply lost for words.
Thanks for drawing attention to this and posting that deeply moving link.

Unimaginable grief for them. Met them all briefly in Gran Canaria just before they went to The Gambia. A truly lovely family. Donation made

Met Cape when on their way down the Iberian coast 2007

Our deepest sympathy

Sarah and Dave, known as Ariadne on here, have met a parents worst nightmare. My thoughts are with them Other people are feeling the same. I hope I am not acting out of turn here but this link is self explanatory.

PS The national press have picked up the main story.
Met them four years ago and became good friends with the whole family. Bethany was one of the nicest cruising kids that you could wish to meet. The word 'tragedy' just doesn't seem adequate.

May I second Skipper_Stu's appeal to donate (link in his post, above) a few beer tokens towards the unexpected expenses that the Smith family are now facing.

Devastated - a wonderful family whom we have had the privilege of knowing - our thoughts are with Dave, Sarah and Bryn.

We have very fond memories of them all.

Bethany will be much missed.

This is unimaginably tragic. We had the privilege of spending a few weeks with Bethany a year ago when she arrived in Antibes to start her crewing career. Matts/tcm put us in touch with the Smith family and we put Bethany up, gave her some work on my boat and lent her a printer for her CV, and then she got a great job on s/y Rowdy (no half measures for Bethany). Her first day in that job was a race in the Voile d'Antibes and they won! She was really quite a star and got more work quickly. It is so profoundly sad that she has died so young.

This is extremely sad. My condolences to the family. I don't know them or recognise the username. I have a daughter the same age and slightly older son just starting out as a new entrant to a career on the water. I just cant quite imagine what they are going through. Their daughter went to work and now she will not be coming home.

It is always sad when someone goes to work and does not return. or returns injured. Its even sadder when the person is a new or young worker. Statistically they are much more likely to be involved in accidents. No point in discussing the reasons now.

When it happens I feel always feel a sense of outrage. These things just should not happen. This young lady was a young worker, working on a large commercial yacht.
Her employer has a duty to ensure her safety. Not the point just now. What happened has happened.

I just happen to believe her employer also has a duty to repatriate her home. And ensure her family can attend to their needs as they feel right.
I would be happy to contribute to a fund to help the family. I just cant help feeling the owners of the vessel upon which she was working should be doing this.

.
God, this is awful. Kathy and I met Cape in Camarinas when we were on our way back to the UK in 2007, lovely people.I met them again in 2011 in Las Palmas before doing the ARC with Matt. A truly wonderful cruising family.

My deepest sympathies Sarah and Dave. Having difficulty with the GoFundMe page just now, but will make a contribution later. If there is anything else I can do please let me know. I know the cruising community will rally round you.

The boat's management company have jumped in and arranged flights, hotels, local transport, local SIM cards and so on, for the Smith family.
There is a link in the OP's post to Go Fund Me which was set up by a cruiser to help the Smith family. 100% of the contributions will be given to them.

The cruising community has indeed rallied about the Smiths. TCM, of this parish has been particularly helpful and he & I are in daily contact. I spoke to Sarah a few hours after the accident and volunteered to be their UK gofer should they need anything done here.

A world of sorrow and tears. JFM, webby , stingo and others have my and Smiths contact stuff if needed. Shit, and now i’m in tears again. I just noticed that some of the very best ybw folks i have met are on this thread ... and also knew the Smiths, reliably great people. Jeez and they had to go visit the scene yesterday Friday which would have been Bethany’s 19th birthday, just so awful...
