Trafalgar - not a word in the French papers....

Re: Trafalgar - not a word in the French papers....

They lost didnt they?

Anyway Victory had been around for quite a few years before Nelson was appointed to her. The ship he liked best of the various commands he held was Agamemnon, which was I think a frigate, built at Bucklers hard.

Re: Still think this link is worth it ....

Of course the conquest of Britain by Guillaume le conquerant doesn't feature in that list... After all "honi soit qui mal y pense" and "Dieu et mon droit" don't sound particularly English do they?

Re: Still think this link is worth it ....

wasnt he a 'brit' anyway ..... at the time didnt brittany and normandy belong to 'britiain' (or whatever it was called then)

I presume the ownership of those far flung lands is recorded somewhere. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

It was the French that bought me and my wife together.
1st the French kiss. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
2nd the French letter. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Many thanks to them all. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: British attitudes to the French

[ QUOTE ]
that those in Britain who are geographically closest to the French appear to have the greatest degree of antipathy towards them.

[/ QUOTE ]

If you lived next door to the neighbour from hell you might have a similar view /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

[ QUOTE ]
It does puzzle me though when you say that it's in your genes. After a few thousand years of being close neighbours, constant, trading, settlement, resettlement, conquest, marriage, holidays, anglo-gites etc etc etc, I would have thought that you'd be precisely identical in the genes department.

[/ QUOTE ]

You'd be suprised just how little marriage has taken place when matched against the amount of killing thats been done!

Anyway, they nick our fish, want us to adopt French as the first language and want GMT to be based in Paris! At the drop of a hat their farmers/dockers/fishermen will blockade the channel ports knowing that the only real damage is being done to British industry - just look how many times "Operation Stack" has been used in the last 12 months - one of the ramps that P&O use in Calias collapsed - as far as I know its still not on-line, why bother when Seafrance has to put on additional ships to cope with the demand.

AND whats more everytime I go to France they conspire to give me food poisoning - every single b***dy time - without fail. So you can see why I dislike the French /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I think the links to lemonde and linternaute are the best - they say simply that unfortunately the pages you are looking for can't be found. Shame!

Eh?

Seem to remember that Napoleon & his lads racked up a fair few away wins, before running up against the Duke of Wellington and Marshal Blucher...

Re: British attitudes to the French

One wonders why despite all your hatred you still venture cross-channel. May I suggest you stick with England if that is the way you feel? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: British attitudes to the French

I am pretty sure I have not yet met anyone from the uk with a hatred of the froggies .........
distain, yes
irritation, yes
begrudging respect - yes (occasionally)
hatred ..... no

I presume I am not unique in this respect

/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: British attitudes to the French

Crikey,

I must be unique then... cuz I quite like the French..... anyone who can smoke Gauloise has my respect /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Seriously, I am never sure where the antipathy comes from, as we have many French friends and holiday in the country very regularly, and never receive anything other than excellent hospitality.....

QED ... the smell of hypocrisy in the afternoon

if you take the whole link, also the part that this silly YBW software did not highlight, and put all that in the adressline it will work

but of course... you wouldn't want it to go even if it was in big flashing neons on the biggest boobs of any page 3 , would you ? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: British attitudes to the French

[ QUOTE ]
I understand that Gauloise are no longer being made. Is this true?

[/ QUOTE ]No!

The last factory in France making Gauloise cigarettes shut down on Wednesday 31 Aug 2005.

Gauloise cigarettes, which sport the winged helmet of the ancient French Gauls, were favored by Jean-Paul Sartre and Pablo Picasso, and the singer Serge Gainsbourg once performed a popular duet in homage of the cigarettes with Catherine Deneuve.

Supplies of the dark Gauloise will be assured by a factory in Spain.

Re: British attitudes to the French

30% of the seamen aboard the "English" fleet were from Scotland.

And I would guess that due to the press-gang few of the Naval personel of any nationality below the rank of Midshipman really wanted to be there!
