Trader - MBM March 2010 page 8?

Maybe make a point of referring to him as Tony Chappell and not TC or Chappell?
That way Google will be able to find threads like this if any new customers are thinking of doing business with him in the future. (No doubt this Phoenix will trade again when the dust has settled).
Linking to other threads isn't a bad idea either.
I would never use words like conman, rip-off, swindle, criminal, illegal, scam, con artist or fraud in case Google decided to use them as keywords ;). I wouldn't want to libel the fella. :D

Tee hee. Exactly my thoughts yesterday when talking about ultrasonic-antifouling claiming that the yacht Why Knot used ultrasonic-antifouling product, when a poster here specifically claimed it was ASM gear on that boat. As I typed I realised that saying "usaf" wont catch google, so I made sure to say ultrasonic-antifouling several times. ultrasonic-antifouling, ultrasonic-antifouling, and ultrasonic-antifouling. If a link helps, here is one to that thread. http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?t=173409

And yes I agree the above criticisms of Tony Chappell. Tony Chappell.

With perfect timing a sales email from Trader Motor Yachts has just pinged into my Inbox. Not from Tony Chappell but from Sarah Chappell. Seems like they're back in business with website, stock etc. Yes, Trader again There's no mention in the 'News' section of them being on the BBC, or of the previous incarnation going bust, or of the alleged fraud. Odd that. Shall I email them back and ask why not???

There are favourable quotes from MBM and MBY reproduced regarding the Sprint 38 though!

Yep, it's possible of course that the Chappell kids had no previous involvement in any of the scams, and have taken the opportunity to buy the business and sideline their crooked father. I wouldn't bet my house on it mind ...

edit: err.. Tony Chappell, Tony Chappell.

Which ex Ed are you referring to? Emrhys? Kim? Jake? Hugo? Simon? Don't think any of these would have told you any different. Of course, you may be thinking of an ex Ed of a different mag :p

Nope you're in the ballpark but in his defence, he was quite mellow at the time:)

I'm sorry Mike, but I absolutely challenger your contention that we are merely a coffee table magazine that shies away from the hard issues.

Stewart

I think that coffee table magazine is the best description I've ever heard of for MBM.

Ho, ho, thats brilliant. I guess they must lurk these forums too. Any idea if Ka Shing is going to be building future Traders for Chappell? It's very odd that they should take away the 475, 535, 575 and sell them through Monte Fino but still continue to build the 38, 42, 64 and 70/75 for Chappell. It does seem that Monte Fino is selling the 64 too which is also rather odd

I agree that the guy mentioned previously, was it Tony Chappell, that was on TV for robbing boating people, hope I spelt his name right Tony Chappell ?

The boating mags have a duty to expose people like Tony Chappell, if they don't they can not be taken seriously.

What's quite odd about the address where Tony Chappell operated Trader from is that there is no sign of Trader operating from there, or of Tony Chappell.
Most of the buildings have been utilised by other parties now - so I guess the New Trader Motor Yacht company must be utilising postal forwarding and redirecting the phones to an alternative address. I also trust the new Trader Motor Yacht co will be operating in a slightly more ethical manner than Mr Tony Chappell did - as exposed on the BBC Inside Out (south) programme in early 2010

OK guys, I've just googled < Tony Chappell > . The bad news is that the top two items are both current Trader website links, all nice positive stuff for them. Item three was a Gludy YBW forum thread from 2006 - signs of trouble. Iten four was an MBY report on the administration, pretty thin. Five to nine were all positive Traders links.

So how do you get this thread or similar ones up to the first google page, where Trader customers might see it?

When I had my campaign against Trader I was originally banned from posting by this forum but after i opened up linked threads to my own forums where I owned the server farm and the ISP they did allow me to post. MBM realised that i was telling the truth that i could prove.

MBM then allowed me to use these forums to further my case against one of their advertisers and won my respect for this. I do not accept that they acted against the forum members in support of an advertiser - the reverse was true and i will always be grateful for that.

At that time only part of the story could be told and the BBC reporter could also only tell part of the story.

In my opinion anyone who has anything to do with using the services of the Chappell family is either ignorant of the facts or mad.

Selling the Sprint is no different.

I want from the frying pan to the fire with dealing with their Penarth agent where i had to use the law to seize boats and send in bailiffs in order to get my money back and I was not alone.

Again anyone who has anything to do with that lot is also mad or ignorant.

My own personal advice is to stay away from Traders no matter who sells them and be play safe

IMHO MBM should now write up a history of the Trader problems including my own - i would help them and in so doing post an account of the truth that would see and end to devastated lives of a string of future customers.

MBM - you have a respectable record in handling this matter - now finish the job.

Having visited the new Trader website there are two things which I dislike, on the ABOUT & CONTACT tabs is their is no mention of who you are dealing with outside of a telephone number and email address.

This is a classic example of the principals of a company 'hiding' behind a company internet facade. Do not be taken in by slick website design

I leave you to draw your own conclusions

I followed Gludy's misfortunes with saddened interest and agree, a follow up in MBM would make an interesting, if sobering, read.
I doubt very much if anyone would now pay a deposit to any one having anything to do with Tony chappell or his or associated business.
I have no axe to grind but just like to see fair play.

The last Trader test we published was in summer 2007, and I think you'll find we critiqued it fairly. The company even modified the design off the back of the test. Hardly 'glowing'. I believe it was the August issue. I invite you to have a read.
I've got the article in front of me. The strap line is "A pedigree performer from a popular yard" wih no criticism of the boat or yard whatsover. I remember being galled by the review considering the appalling history that Trader had (as well publicised on these forums). [Crikey, they were weighty tomes back then - 222 pages!]

I think that "Coffee Table fodder" is a little unfair. Airport "Executive Lounge fodder" would be more accurate as anyone who regularly visits the T5 BA lounges will testify!

Ref the 64, praps they just intend to take the deposit and not actually deliver a boat. Some of the blurb on that website is just incredible....

"Trader is the number one long range motor yacht brand in the UK, with more than 500 vessels sold since the brand was launched in 1979.
Models range from the 38 Sprint to the 75 Superyacht - all encompassing Trader's market-leading combination of timeless design and cutting-edge engineering."

Cripes. They could also claim to be the number one Brand at ripping off customers. Mebbe I'll suggest that to them too.

I wonder if this thread will get pulled.....

Well - hopefully anyone intrested in Trade Motor Yachts will visit the offices .... I don't suppose Tony Chappell will be involved in the business - well, not officially, but no doubt he will be supporting the family business - even with his reputation.
By the way - search on YouTube for dodgy boat broker might just help for the proggy about Tony Chappell and his reported dodgy dealings and short changing whilst running the Trader name.

I can't see how a thread about Tony Chappells dodgy dealings as reported on the BBC can be libelous ... even if he didn't mean it, Tony Chappell is leading a jetset lifestyle whilst leaving clients and suppliers out of pocket...
