Has anyone got any first hand experience on the Trader 41+2? Regarding seakeeping and general ownership. What sort of fuel economy and speeds etc, with the volvo 61's, 306hp. Many thanks
 
tamarind, I have no first hand experience of the 41+2 with TAMD61s but some friends of ours owned one and we used to cruise in company extensively with them. IIRC, the 41+2 maxes out at about 18-20kts and cruises at about 16kts. That means it will use more fuel per mile than a typical 30kt planing boat with the same engines. To us, the 41+2 seemed to roll a bit more than a typical planing boat of similar size and it certainly threw up more spray over the flybridge but it's seakeeping seemed to be fine. Obviously, the 41+2's accommodation is one of its strengths and very suitable for a big family or a load of guests; there aren't many 40 footers with 6 berths. I always thought that the circular seating in the saloon was a bit wasteful of space but the side access doors are a big plus. The galley is in a slightly odd position next to the aft cabin but that's possibly an advantage because there will be less movement aft so making a brew and a few sarnies underway should be easier than with a forward galley. The aft deck is enormous and that makes it a great boat for entertaining especially if a hardtop has been fitted. I seem to remember that osmosis might have been issue on some 41+2s but a survey will reveal if there is any problem. Personally I think the styling is attractive and hasn't really aged because it was never modern in the first place! Traders still seem to have quite a following and a 41+2 could be a sound buy if you find a good one
 
There are some very nice older Trader 41s on the Shannon. A popular family boat due to their cavernous and traditional interior. But they seem to be operated mainly in displacement mode when crusing (ie SD boats that can plane occasionally when required). The ones I've been on over here seem slightly under horsed for planning. I love the look of them inside and out. The build quality on the older ones I been on seemed very good (ie > 10yo).

I agree, that boat has been for sale for a while, they need to get realistic with the price if they want to shift her. 41+2 was my first choice for our live-aboard until my wife forced me into buying my Bertram 42. There are very few in the UK but loads in the eastern med. In many respects the Bertram and Trader are similar but the space on the Bertram is awesome by comparison. Massive build strength and everlasting Detroit Diesels makes for a great package.

She was sold last spring. As regards the Trader price, yes the dealer has priced her in "cloud cuckoo land". She came in from the Med around 2007.
 
Hi guys, thanks for all your comments. I have now sold my beloved Fairline targa (very hard decision) and now in the process of purchasing a trader 41+2, what a big difference!! She needs a bit of work but looking forward to the challenge

I am teaching on one as we speak. Day 3 tomorrow. Lovely boat, with bags of room, but don't expect to get anywhere in a hurry. Brought the boat back from brighton on Friday - 5 hour trip.
