Taking the deep sea route across the Bay of Biscay, is there any means of my position being reported back to home?

I wasn't thinking of International ZD2 and I'm not in the league of sat phone owners. With MMSI I suppose I could call up any big ship around and ask if they could pass on my (= their) position.

YellowBrick and DeLorme InReach are the two that spring to mind; may well be others.

Only alternative to this kind of satellite system would be to go the full MF/HF route (either Marine or Ham or both) but that's going to be significantly more complicated and expensive, albeit a fun hobby in its own right.

Delorme InReach seems to be comparable in cost to McMurdo Fastfind (and offers more features).

What am I missing?

If you have your AIS on then you can tracked 24 hrs a day on the lap top. So everyone will know where you are.

Peter

This is not correct. AIS is a VHF signal and is line of site. If you're not within the radio horizon of an internet relay station, you won't be tracked.

But in any event AIS on yachts is receive only. You have to transmit surely for your position to be monitored, yes or no ?

Reactivation costs around £100 per year if I read the website correctly. I used one on a delivery trip, it was great for letting people know where you where.

The fast find is different, it isn't a tracker but a one off emergency locator beacon, a bit like a small epirb
