Hi to all.

We have found out that i have a great great great great grandad John Pearce who worked all his live has a oyster dredger in tollesbury on a smack boat called the Dove registered around 1851 ck111 he fished all his life and died as a master mariner in his 70s we also found out that he was a oyster watchman come the end.

My question is this would it be right to rename my boat after his as a remembrance to him, secondly could any one give me some idea of the qualification he would need to become a master mariner as we are still trying to find paper work out to give more info on his life.

We also understand that his wife Sarah Jane Stevenson her dad Allan Stevenson was a member of the coast guard born in 1805, work at great clacton and work in gold hanger. but also worked in Ryde, isle of wight as a boat man.

any info would be greatly appreciated.:D

does this help at all regarding tracing further info about his time as a Mastr Mariner: http://www.mariners-l.co.uk/UKMasters.html

Once the various registers and indexes of Masters and Mates have been searched, the next step is to obtain a copy of the man's Application for a certificate. Having passed the examination for a certificate of competency, a man had to make written application for the granting of the certificate. The information was entered in registers and the resultant information is of great value to the researcher.

Applications for certificates (awarded before 1900) are held at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London SE10 9NF. For these, you will need to provide the certificate number. Not all applications have survived. They should include all voyages undertaken over at least the four years prior to the award of the certificate, along with useful biographical information supplied by the applicant. The NMM makes a charge for production of these certificates and has a long waiting period. Their web site is at http://www.nmm.ac.uk They can be contacted by post at the The National Maritime Museum, Romney Road, Greenwich, London SE10 9NF

I did some digging into my past a few years back, turned out the person i was searching came from Southampton and was in the royal marines, he then moved to Chesterfield in Derbyshire where my connection with him was made.

I always wondered where my families love of the sea came from, as we are so landlocked here in Nottinghamshire.
