Towing my boat on the IOW ferry.

Re: Expensive?

Most of Bute is owned by the Marquis of Bute. He doesn't want one.

What Jonny Dumfries wants (aka MoB), Jonny Dumfries gets.

I totally agree with him on this too. Kyles of Bute - where this particular ferry crosses is one of the most picturesque areas on the west coast. It would be ruined by a bridge.

Re: Expensive?

Does Bute still have that multi marbled urinal in Rothesay? I sent an architect friend there and he guarded the entrance while his wife went for a look round too. What an extraordinary loo!

Re: Expensive?

Have to agree. No bridge. It's a fair old drive round there from Glasgow and the wee break to stretch your legs is always welcome. Especially if the weather is as nice as it was a couple of weeks ago. BTW, what's the story with the sunken cat in Rothesey harbour?

what a rip-off!

never though to hear of the scots being taken for a ride like that. the tamar ferry (about 400 yds) is 50p return for a car and free to foot passengers and cyclists.

Re: Expensive?

It surely does! It is quite extraordinary.

As you will be aware, the only created a Gentleman's convenience. Gawd knows what the Ladies were expected to do!

Re: what a rip-off!

The frightening thing is that CAL-MAC is a government owned company.

The only other ferry to Bute is also run by....err.... CAL-MAC - Wemyss Bay - Rothesay.

Sunken Cat?

Talked to my parents last night and they never mentioned it. Mind you they normally go into Rothesay on a wednesday - but with the bitter E wind this week decided against it.

.....Oh I know the one. Blue in colour? White topsides? Best B&Q gloss? Its been wallpapered inside, so I'm told. Hmmmm it'll never go far that one.

The general concensus seems to be one I agree with. Choose your time and tide and sail your boat across. I know it seems like a big deal BUT you'll feel like a million dollars at t'other end. You can always take someone more experienced than yourself and you might even find someone on this website willing to give you a hand.

I sail out of Warsash and regularly across to Ryde in my 18 footer Juno560 (which will be similar to yours)

MUST pick your tides or it takes for ever (as with any trip on the Solent really) but otherwise its a great sail taking two to three hours.

The car parking for boat and trailer are great and free.
The hard is easy to use (though easiest when it is closish to low tide as its not really steep enough near to high tide and you end up with wet feet pushing the trailer down until the water is deep enough)

Once launched the Harbour master is normally quite happy to let you leave the boat on the pontoon whilst you park up.

I'd recommend it.

My boat is not quite yet ready to go but will be within a few weeks so I'd be happy to sail over with you 'in convoy' if you want some reassurance - or I'd be happy to come with you but would need to get back in that case!

Let me know if you want a hand or more advice.

I have taken my RIB across on the IOW ferry a couple of time (logistical purposes rather than not wanting to boat over) and had no problems. Very helpfull staff. Both times had flares and petrol tanks full. No questions asked in this respect.

However, I would agree that it would be more satisfying to sail across. If the weather does turn foul on the chosen day you can always drive to the ferry and wait for a space which is not too long at this time of year.

If you were to launch from The Camber in Pompy, there is an adjacent car/trailer park. Neap tides would be best as LW Ryde is around mid-day so you could go in on a riser rather than get pressurised by a falling tide. Also, tidal streams less.

If you do fancy a sail across I would be happy to provide an escort and bring you back to the mainland. PM if interested in this option.
