It is time to renew my Yacht insurance, so, prompted by a flyer via MDL, I contacted Towergate to request a quote.

At first, all goes well, then we come to what I want to insure, please list all removable items on the Yacht worth more than £250 she says. Define removable I say. For example what about a spinnaker? She does not know. A little drilling down reveals that she has no idea of the terms of the policy she is quoting for and has I suspect never sailed a yacht in her life.

I walked away but was I just unlucky in my call handler or is this typical of them?

Other little gems included, double excess for underwater damage in coastal waters.

MY broker once suggested moving me to a different insurer, at a better price. I then started to read the terms and conditions, and it was immediately obvious that the insurer probably didn't know which end of a boat was which! I stayed with the existing (RKJ) insurer.

Towergate used to be good, particularly the dedicated policy for Moody Owners Assn. They then had financial problems, change of staff and location and, in my opinion went down hill fast with large premium increases. Along with many others, I changed to Y Yacht, who do know what they're talking about.

Tower gate is just another broker now operating under a new name after bailout. You need for this and all the other brokers to really look at terms offered by the actual insurers . I don’t know who covers TG branded marine products but as has been said it’s all down to the claims handling. Best advice is to initially look at the net promoter score for any insurer . Insolvency of an insurer is rare so it’s poor responsiveness and claims handling by outsourced third parties which tend to lead to most complaints . Just remember if you have issues Linked in is a source of information info.
