Torx bits

I have to remove some security Torx screws (the ones that have a pip in the centre) . I have a plain Torx screwdriver of the correct size but need to order a security one. Question is how do I define the size? They are T5, 10 etc. How can I measure the one that I already have. Is it across the extremities of the star?

Have a look at the likes of screwfix as they do security sets ,boxes of every weird and wonderful type you could ever come across ?

I bought one of those. 33 weird and wonderful devices, as you said. Sadly, not one of them fitted the security bolt on the LandRover lock I needed to dismantle!

VAG seem to use 12 point spline fasteners so that is yet another set of tools you need. Life was much easier with just slotted screws.

Of course, by taking that simple option you'd have missed out on learning about the contents of other people's toolboxes while they completely ignore your question, so it's your call

They are not very secure. I jam a normal screwdriver between the middle bit and 2 of the star points. At worst the middle bit breaks off and you can use a normal torx bit or continue with the normal screwdriver. Did this when I had to get a couple off and had no bits to hand.

I had a similar issue a while back when I needed to replace the internal battery of our rice cooker. I bought a fairly large set of what seemed to be reasonable tools from eBay. Cost was less than £10 and wasn’t worth the hassle of buying individually.

Like most things it is not as simple as just the size, there are Torx, Torx plus and of course the 5 sided buggers, all available in security style!
The cheap sets off of ebay are just fine.

I've got the Draper kit which has saved the day on a couple of occasions. The latest was a few days ago when I had to replace the cable in my hedge trimmer. Only one screw had the dimple in the centre but that would have been enough to make the job difficult.

The draper kit is good until you get a security screw bit buried in the casing and the hole diameter is smaller than the tool holding the bit.

I got a draper set of bits for £3.77 unfortunately the screws I want to undo are recessed and the magnetic holder is too wide to fit through the recess. I've now ordered a single screw driver from China. The delivery is fairly long so the jobs on hold for several weeks. Incidentally the draper set was very poor quality.

LOL this is exactly what happened! Some of the bits were very poor, holes off centre

Similar to tri-wings used extensively by Lockheed on the L1011. I still have some those bits ?

I had a car plastic engine cover held on with two torx. I guess the constant cycling of hot and cold causes them to seize in their holes?
They could be put in not very tight yet a nightmare to remove.
Bought a Halford pro set of torx. Bits were too hard and snapped.
Clarke pro, too soft and bent.
Tried screwfix/toolstation . Snapped
Saw a t-bar set in lidls. Their tools are usually good and no fuss returns.
Brilliant ! Undone those troublesome torx everytime!

But had you loosened them already with the previous 3 attempts and allowed Lidl to steal the glory of undoing the troublesome screw...?!
