topping lift

What is the best way to rig a topping lift to a GIBSEA 242.
If I need to run a line inside the mast how do I do this ?
We have access to a mast ladder at my marina.
This is my frst boat.

IMO, the best way is to hange a block on a swivel from the "crane" at the mashead (on the after side of the mast) going down to a cleat on deck at the stern. It should pass through a stainless or plastic ring half way up the backstay to prevent it from getting messed up in the main. That way, you can control the boom from the cockpit (raising it up a little before taking a reef, for instance) and you have a spare mainsail halyard in case of need (just take it off the end of the boom and attach it to the head of the main).

fit a permanent set of lazyjacks, then you can do without a topping lift. It is also handy when lowering your mainsail single-handed .

At the expensive end of the market are a range of boom struts that do a similar thing; but are a solid (spring/gas loaded) kicking strap. Might be worth a look.

If youv'e already got a rope kicker get a Barton boom strut, well engineered simple and now realitively cheap. It wont cost much more than buying the neccessary blocks and rope. I fitted one to my Sonata and its brilliant
