8 years ago my hull was painted with donegal green Toplac. Very nice but now a bit 'tatty' and difficult to polish.

So, I'm going to paint it again - same colour.

I'm considering sanding it with a fine grit and just going for the Toplac topcoat.
In a couple of places though (about 2 sq ins, and 1 sq in) the original paint has flaked off leaving the original undercoat from 8 yrs ago.
There are a couple of small 'spider' crazed areas too. Hopefully they'll sand out?

Question is....
Should I sand, then apply pre-kote (grey/blue) all over (or just where paint has flaked?), sand again, then Toplac,
or just go for the Toplac?

Anyone done it???

Many thanks. (some work ahoy!)

Fill the grazed areas. Sand any loose areas back the the whole hull with a scotch pad then wash the hull down and leave it to dry. Tack cloth the hull and roller and tip your undercoat like you are glossing next day roller and tip your toplac when it finished walk away , leave for a week to harden then wipe off any bugs! Result shiny boat!

Good luck with your plans.

I have a feeling the latest Toplac won't apply as well, or last as well as it did 8 years ago (unless you're using the same tin of course).

After dreadful results with it I changed brands and used Jotun.

I have just done my boot topping in Toplac, it was deliciously thick, almost creamy, and one coat (over 2 coats of Primocon) gave a hard and glossy finish, I would recommend it. The best paint I have ever used.

I am a rank amateur, lacking in patience, I just followed the instructions, and gave it a long hard stir with a big allen key in a drill.

+1 The least amount of work. I painted oxford blue Toplac over the same and got a good result.

It was in the International instructions many yrs ago

It is (or was) claimed to increase the depth of gloss on the final coat. Not sure that is relevant to modern paints, although I agree that when recoating a coat of undercoat under the final Toplac does seem to make it flow better.

Interesting, I never though of mixing under- and top-coats.

Its an old trick.

Do not mix Toplac with 2 pack Perfection under coat though! Whether or not mixing it with Pre Kote is a sound idea or not I would not like to say.

The sound areas of your existing Toplac should only need lightly abrading in the manner described on the Product data sheet. Areas that have flaked should be be primed / undercoated with Pre Kote. After the specified preparation.
Perfection undercoat will not be compatible with the exiting Toplac as it should not be used over single pack finishes

For all products follow the procedures specified in the relevant data sheet. They are all available on the International Yachtpaints website.

I only use undercoat where repairs have been needed. Otherwise I just go over the Toplac with 120 grit, tack-cloth then repaint.
The topsides were done four years ago with two coats of Pre-Kote and two of Toplac. Overcoated once since and will be done again before launch this year.
A slight drift, but a I found a dollop of Owatrol in the Toplac helped with roller and tipping, keeping a wet edge longer.
