Next time someone casually drops the fact they own a Porsche into the conversation I fear it won't have quite the same kudos for anyone who saw Top Gear tonight.

:-D

No, they had to buy one each for max £1,500, cue one 924, one 944, and one very knackered 928!

They then had to do a series of exercises with them, all very funny stuff. Worth watching the repeat on tomorrow night.

Which one have you got?

I've always wanted a 928S4, I reckon they were the performance car bargain for a bit, but probably old enough to be a potential liability now unless you get a very pampered one...

All great cars though!

I got the 924S. Its basically a 944 without the turbo. But i blew the engine and its now got a turbo. So its a 944 without the arches. I'd like a 928. Theres a chap not far from me who's got one. Had it from new. Fastest he's ever been in it is 80!

Ive got an old 928, I think it looks great, and as long as the tourqu tube dosent start rummbling, the maintainece is quite reasonable just so long as the part dosent come from Porche!! Just now im looking for a 924 with the taga top (the larger removable roof panel)
Are they reliable? any problems that get expensive to look for??

Thats what I've got. Still even have the porker bag that the roof goes in when you take it out.
Is it reliable, yup it has an audi/vw engine. Hydraulic tappets so make sure the oil has been changed often. Brilliant handling...engine front gearbox at the back. Electrics are the main bug bear, mirrors, roof and tailgate/boot release.
I get most of my bits and pieces that are vehicle specific from German & Swedish. Other stuff comes from usual car places. Laquer on the teledial alloys is crap. So I stripped and polished mine, but now I look like a drug dealer. Headlight motors can give up the ghost, but the motor is a Bosch jobby used for winows as well. Easy to source and cheap.
Body work doesnt really rust unless theres be a dodgy repair. Mines on a D plate and theres no rust anywhere.
Most annoying thing is the roof seal. It goes hard with age and leaks. I replaced mine, sourced from G&S, a couple of years ago. Cost was about 30 quid if I rember rightly
People larf at my car. That is until they find they can't keep up with it. Anyone can go fast in a straight line, but these things go fast round the twisty bits too. Predictable under/over steer and doesn't normally break away suddenly. Drifts the rear end when you push it too hard. They are easy to drive fast and lull you into a false sence of security. Get one on a track and have a giggle. I did and blew the thing up....ho hum.
